Giornata stenopeica, le stampe.
Ho selezionato, scansionato, aggiustato un poco i files e stampato le foto della giornata mondiale di fotografia stenopeica. Le ho appese con le solite calamitine alla mia libreria. Non avete idea per un fotografo quanto sia utile una libreria metallica! Si, mi piacciono queste foto!
After selecting, scanning and adjusting I printed the photos from the Worldwide Pinhole Day. I hanged them on my bookcase with the usual small magnets. You have no idea how useful is for a photographer to have a metallic bookcase! Yes, I like these pictures!

Giornata della Mamma. Come potrei dimenticare quella Mamma che mi ha dato il regalo più bello che potessi immaginare, sua figlia Simonetta? Anche Adriana adesso è in cielo con suo marito Bruno, e anche loro sono sorridenti come in questa Polaroid di pochi anni fa. 58 anni di matrimonio sono stati tanti, questo era AMORE!
Mother’s Day. How could I forget that Mother who gave me the most beautiful present I could dream of, her daughter Simonetta? Adriana is now in the sky with her husband Bruno, and they as well are smiling, like in this Polaroid of a few years ago. 58 years wedding are many, this was LOVE!

Oggi è la Festa della Mamma. Io non ho più la mia Mamma. Qualche anno fa è volata in cielo per raggiungere mio Papà che se ne era andato tanto tempo prima. E allora a me piace pensare che ora siano di nuovo insieme, contenti come in questa vecchia fotografia, che ora sta su una parete del mio studio e che ho trovato in una delle tante scatole di scarpe piene di ricordi. Sul retro con l’inconfondibile calligrafia di mamma, a matita c’è scritto: Strada Valnegra, 1951.
Today is Mother’s Day. I have no more my Mom. A few years ago she flew up to the sky to reach my Dad who left us many years before. And I love to think they are now happy together again, like in this old photograph I found in one of the many shoebox full of memories, and which now is on a wall of my studio. On the back with the unmistakable handwriting of my mom, by pencil is written: On the Road of Valnegra (Blackvalley), 1951

Da molti anni l’ultima domenica di aprile è la Giornata Mondiale della Fotografia Stenopeica. Per chi non lo sapesse, si tratta di fotografare con apparecchi che al posto dell’obiettivo hanno solo un minuscolo foro. E’ il principio della “camera obscura”, strumento utilizzato da pittori come Canaletto per riprodurre i minuscoli dettagli dei suoi paesaggi. Io confesso di non essere particolarmente appassionato a questo tipo di fotografia ma in questi tempi di perfezione digitale e fotografie “virtuali” che si vedono solo su schermi, monitor e altri strumenti tecnologici ogni tanto mi piace questo approccio molto basilare. E allora quest’anno ho deciso di prendere parte a questa manifestazione anche per provare quella sensazione particolare dovuta al fatto di sapere che nella stessa giornata in tutto il mondo altri fotografi sono impegnati nella stessa attività.
Since many years the last sunday of April is the Worldwide Pinhole Day. For the friends who do not know what we are speaking about it means taking pictures with a camera which instead of a lens has a very small hole, a pinhole. It’s the principle of the “camera obscura” used, among the others by Canaletto to reproduce all the details in his landscape paintings. I have to admit I’m not really passionate of it but in the today’s times so full of the extreme perfection of digital photography and with so many “virtual” photos, which you only see on a monitor or on the screen of an high tech device I like occasionally this return to a basic photography. Therefore I decided to take part. Another reason is the special feeling you have when you do something and you know that many other people worldwide are doing something similar.

Quest’anno non avevo un’idea precisa sulla quale lavorare, e allora dopo questi test del giorno prima ho deciso di fare qualche cosa in bianco e nero, adoperando una pellicola istantanea ad alta sensibilità. Ho iniziato di buona lena subito al mattino, mentre preparavo la colazione.
This year I had not an exact project to work on, therefore after these tests of the day before I decided to use an high speed instant film and work in black and white. The start was early, breakfast time.

Dopo la colazione ho provato una natura morta, la frutta è un soggetto familiare dei miei esercizi di disegno. After breakfast I tried a still life, fruit is a familiar subject for my attemtpt to learn drawing.

Una delle difficoltà di questo tipo di fotografia è che la mia macchina, che essenzialmente è una scatola di cartone con applicato un dorso Polaroid per le pellicole non ha mirino e l’inquadratura viene fatta ad occhio, così come l’esposizione. Il vantaggio di adoperare pellicole istantanee è quello di poter correggere subito gli errori. Che comunque si pagano cari, considerato il prezzo di queste pellicole 
One fo the difficulties in this kind of photography is that my 
camera, which essencially is a carboard box with a polaroid back, has no viewfinder. Framing (and exposure) is based more or less on the photographer experience. The positive side to use instant film is that you can correct what is wrong, but mistakes can be expensive taking into account the cost of the films

Fotografare è una questione di luce, e allora ho pensato ad un ritrattto. Mia moglie, che si è prestata a rimanere il più possibile immobile per il tempo necessario per l’esposizione, circa 15″.
Photography is about the light and I thought of a portrait. My wife was my model, trying not to move for the necessary time, about 15″.

Nonostante la giornata piovosa, nella speranza di una location suggestiva siamo andati al lago ed abbiamo approfittato di una piccola schiarita. La pellicola si è dimostrata troppo sensibile e il risultato è un po’ evanescente. Allora ci ho giocato un poco…
In spite of the rainy day, in the hope of a good location we went in the afternoon to a lake, where we just took one photo in between the showers. But the light was too much for this kind of film and the result was somehow evanescent. I played a little with it…

Sfortunatamente il molo dietro la schiena della mia modella disturba molto. Sarebbe facile toglierlo con un programma di postproduzione, ma trattandosi di fotografia analogica non mi sembra corretto! Teniamo l’errore! Saremo più attenti un’altra volta!
Unfortunately the peer beside the back of my model disturbs the composition. It would be easy to remove it with a postproduction software, but here we are in the field of the pinhole photography and I think it would not be correct! We’ll keep the mistake, next time we’ll pay more attention!
La pioggia ci ha rimandato quasi subito a casa. Avevo ancora qualche foto da scattare, e ho pensato al vaso fotografato il sabato. Ma non volendo ripetere la stessa foto ci ho messo le mie rose secche. La luce stava calando ed ho dovuto adoperare tempi abbastanza lunghi.

Because of the rain we drove back home soon. I still had a few pics in the camera and I thought at vase I photographed on saturday. Burt desiring to change a little I put my dried roses in the vase.

Per chi fosse interessato ai dettagli tecnici ho adoperato una pellicola istantanea bianco e nero Fuji FP-3000B, dalla sensibilità di 3.000 iso. I tempi di esposizione in casa variavano fra i 10″ e i 180″(vaso con le rose).
For who is interested in the technical details I used a B&W 3000 iso Fuji film FP-3000B . Exposure times varied between 15″ and 180″ (the roses).

Ho già spiegato che sono in un momento (un poco forzato) di distacco dai computer. E pertanto di rinnovato interesse per la fotografia analogica, una fotografia po’ basic. E allora sapendo che domani sarà la Giornata Mondiale della Fotografia Stenopeica ho deciso di spolverare la mia macchina di cartone, made by Polaroid, metterci una pellicola (Fuji!) e fare qualche foto di prova. Solo per ricordarmi come si fa!

I already said I’m in a moment of detachment from the computer world, honestly it is a “little forced” moment. Therefore I’m back to my interest for analog photography. A basic photography. Tomorrow will be the Worldwide Pinhole Day therefore II decided to take the dust away from my old cardboard camera, made by Polaroid, to insert a film (Fuji) and make a few trials. Just trying to remember how to operate it!
Old and new photo technology are mixed on my desk!
A volte mi piace giocare con la fotografia, è il bambino che c’è dentro di me che si sveglia! Nella foto qui sopra e in quella sotto si mescolano fotografie fatte con una scatola di cartone senza obiettivo con altre scattate con una Rolleiflex di più di cinquant’anni fa presentate sullo schermo di un computer! Ovviamente queste sono scattate con una machina digitale

Sometimes I like to play with photography, it’s the child inside me who wakes up! In the two photos above there is a mix of pictures made with a cardboard box with a small hole instead of a lens and pictures made with a more than 50 years old Rolleiflex shown on the monitor of a computer! Of course these have been taken with a digital camera

Per finire questo vaso di cristallo si prestava bene per un tentativo di still life.
To end this crystal vase was a good subject to attempt a simple still life.

In questi giorni il mio computer principale è in manutenzione ed io sto riorganizzando il mio “sistema” informatico. Di conseguenza mi sono trovato a pensare come la tecnologia abbia cambiato tante cose, fra le quali il modo di “vedere” le fotografie. Ho già esposto in questo post e in quest’altro quanto io ritenga importante la stampa delle immagini, cosa che mi appassiona e a volte mi fa soffrire. Ma recentemente l’amico Dave con la domanda “chi di voi scatta diapositive?” mi ha fatto pensare e ricordare che piacere immenso, fatto di sensazioni anche tattili fosse il disporre le slides su un tavolo luminoso e guardarle con cura.
“Questa si, accidenti questa no, avrei dovuto essere più attento…”
Già, c’era un tempo in cui le foto le guardavamo…
In these days my main computer is under maintenance, I’m reorganizing my small computer system. As consequence I found myself thinking how the technology changed many things in our lives, included the way we look at our photos. I already mentioned here and here my thoughts about how important is to me printing our photos, which I love and sometime hate! Then recently my friend Dave ask “who is still shooting slides?” This simple question brought me back in the time and reminded me what an immense pleasure, with various feeling was to put the slides on a lightbox and evaluate them with attention.
“This is ok, this not really, how was possible I made suche a mistake…hmmm next one not so bad…”
Yes, there was a time when we looked at the photographs…
