Knitting for L’Aquila

Lavorando a maglia per L’Aquila.      Please scroll down for english text

Mia moglie sta lavorando a maglia.

knitting for L'Aquila

My wife is knitting. No, it is not a new pullover for me. She’s taking part in an action of Urban Knitting for the italian historical town of L’Aquila,

an idea by the cultural Association Animammersa which has ben proposed through the site “mettiamoci una pezza“, let’s patch it up.

In the night of April 6th, 2009 at H 03.32 the old, historical university town of L’Aquila was hit by a severe earthquake. 308 people lost their lives, many were injured and more than 60.000 had to leave their home.

For most of the inhabitants life will never be the same again.

What has this to do with knitting ? Translating from the site : ” You take the historical heart of a town. You take away all the people living there, the people entering the shops, the people working in the offices, the people shopping in the daily market, you take away shops, offices, banks…you take away, you take away, you take away and you get …void. This is L’Aquila. …And you have a grey place. No more life, no more colors and in this place nothing is now real”.

The proposal is to cover a surface of 100 square meters and spread flowers in downtown historic L’Aquila on the third earthquake’s anniversary  on April 6th, 2012

If you like to take part please follow the instructions here (down the page is the english part) . My wife is already working !

Perhaps someone will ask what has to do this with photography: in my opinion photography means also to live the world in which we are and when possible to share the creative actions which take place. And I’m not sure if possible but I  would like to go to L’Aquila on April 6th.

  1. I think you are so right, photography does indeed mean to live the world in which we are. I like this little photographic essay about something of a small event in itself but huge in terms of social consciousness and humankind. So much passion and heart in this post. Thank you for opening our minds for L’Aquila.

  2. What a wonderful idea and a wonderful thing to do.

I think it has a lot to do with photography, photographs capture the world around us. The beauty and the sadness.

  3. This is so nice that your wife is knitting for L’Aquila. I know and I remember what a tragic earthquake hit there… Dear Robert, this is so meaningful and so nice too what you are doing. Thank you, with my love, nia
