Piccolo viaggio, pellicole, selezione e Wim Wenders.

Un amico, dopo aver letto l’articolo precedente mi ha chiesto perchè quando sono in vacanza spesso preferisco adoperare macchine fotografiche con la pellicola anzichè sfruttare le comodità della fotografia digitale. Una settimana di vacanza e tre pellicole, come in questo post. La motivazione l’avevo  spiegata in questo articolo,  oggi vorrei  rielaborare il pensiero.

A friend of mine after having read my previous post ask me why when I’m on holiday I  oft prefer  to shoot with a film camera rather than a more convenient digital one. A week holiday and three film, as visible  in this post. I already explained my motivation here, today I would like to elaborate  my thinking.

La lentezza (per un fotografo tranquillo) è importante, la fotografia analogica impone  riflessione. Prima di scattare si pensa, anche perchè gli scatti sono limitati e per di più costano. Quando adopero la vecchia Rolleiflex ho a disposizione solo 12 scatti per pellicola pertanto devo prima decidere cosa fotografare per raccontare la storia che ho in mente e per ogni soggetto faccio al massimo un paio di scatti. Slowness  (for a quiet photographer) is important, analogue photography dictates your times and you have to reflect on your choices.  Frames are limited and moreover are expensive. When I use my old Rolleiflex I know a film only has 12 frames, therefore first I must decide what to photograph to tell the story I have in my mind and for each subject I usually do not fire more than a couple of shots.  You can see a few pictures here.

Pertanto vacanza, lentezza, tranquillità. Per essere sincero devo un poco smentirmi! Poichè non rifiuto in toto i vantaggi della tecnologia a volte mi piace avere con me sia una macchina analogica, sia una piccola digitale che in caso di situazioni difficili può darmi più facilmente il risultato! Per curiosità vostra questa era la mia borsa l’ultima volta che sono stato in Toscana.

Holiday, slowness, quiet. To be honest now I have to contradict myself! Because I do not reject the advantages brought by the technology I like sometimes to have with me both, a film camera and a small digital which in case of difficult circumstances makes easier to get the result. Above you see what was in my bag last time I went to Tuscany.     

Un altro piccolo grande vantaggio dello scattare in pellicola è che se si scatta poco la fase di editing è più facile: avendo pensato prima ora ci sono meno scatti da selezionare. Settimana scorsa, in questo post ho anticipato un paio di foto dal breve viaggio appena fatto. In tre giorni, viaggio compreso ho adoperato una pellicola (ne avevo due con me!). Una volta sviluppata dal laboratorio e scansionata da me, mentre in cuffia ascoltavo Keith Jarret ho dovuto visionare e aggiustare solo 36 files !

An additional small great advantage shooting film is that editing becomes easier: having already thought before now there are less photos to select. Last week, in this post I displayed a couple of photos from the short journey I had just finished. In three days, traveling included I only shot a  film (I had two with me just to be sure!). Once developed by the lab and scanned by myself, while listening to Keith Jarret in the headphones I had to preview , select and adjust only 36 files!

Questo per quanto riguarda la parte…pratica, ma ci sono altre  considerazioni: una è il gusto di adoperare le macchine di una volta, con tre, quattro  comandi al massimo: sensibilità, diaframma, tempi e messa a fuoco. A me piace proporre questa analogia: se devo fare un viaggio di lavoro o per un’altra necessità importante è chiaro che guidare un’auto moderna, silenziosa e confortevole, con aria condizionata e cambio automatico è certamente meglio. Si arriva a destinazione più riposati. Non ho dubbi qui. Ma se voglio provare il piacere della guida una spider o un’altra auto sportiva degli anni 50 può essere più divertente! Lo stesso è per la fotografia: quando mi serve LA FOTO,  la fotografia digitale è benvenuta. Ma quando voglio gustare il procedimento (anche a rischio di perdere qualche immagine) allora è il momento delle pellicole!

This is the “pragmatic” side of the story, but I have more consideraton : one is simply the pleasure to use the old times cameras, with no more than three or four controls: iso, speed, aperture and focus. I like to  say: if I have to make a journey because of my job or any other important reason it is clear that driving a modern car, silent and comfortable, with air conditioning, automatic drive is the best option. For sure, no doubts here. You arrive relaxed. But if you desire to enjoy the pure pleasure of driving probably a roadster or a sport car from the 50s can be more satisfying! It is the same for photography: when I need THE PHOTO digital is welcome. But when I desire to enjoy the process (even risking to mistake a few shots) than it is…film time!

Recentemente ho letto sul “La Lettura”  inserto del Corriere un’intervista con Wim Wenders, regista e fotografo a cura di Vincenzo Trione (se potete provate a recuperarla, ne vale la pena, era il 3 novembre) e mi ha colpito una sua frase: “Sul set uso il digitale da vent’anni, ma nelle foto no. Per me sarebbe impossibile. Ricorro all’analogico non per nostalgia, ma per piacere.” E aggiunge come sia importante per lui l’attesa dello sviluppo delle immagini, aggiungendo che il digitale consentendo di controllare subito cosa si ha fatto elimini ogni incanto.

A few days ago I read an interview with Wim Wenders, movie director and photographer and I was hit by one sentence: “In the movie I work with digital since twenty years, but in photography no. It would be impossible to me. I use analogue not because of nostalgic feelings, but for pleasure” And he adds how important is for him having to wait for the development of the images when digital, allowing to check soon what you made removes  all the enchantment.
