maggio 2020, caffè con Wim Wenders please scroll down for english text, thanks
We are at the beginning of the nineth week since the lockdown and we are officially in phase two with a little bit more freedom. Unfortunately too many people understood it as “everibody is free” and too many have been aorund in the streets, in the parks, in the pubs. And without the safety distancing it is very dangerous because the virus is still around us, ready to hit like a sniper.
Said in a graphic way each one could kill somebody else. Perhaps an asymptomatic carrier who could spread the virus around and we have already seen what does it means an esponential growth of the pandemic. How it can be fast (and furious) in overwhelming the hospitals. A friend who lives in another country sent me the text of a sign in his town: a lighter lockdown does not mean the virus has gone, it means in this moment a place in Intensive Care is available for you.
Speriamo almeno il nostro angelo custode ci protegga…
Let’s hope at least our guardian angel will protect us…
We have been at home missing many things, many habits. Like a good coffee with friends at the coffee shop behind the corner. Therefore I decided “to invite” a special friend when I drink my expresso at home together with my wife. This week I invited a great photographer and movie director: Wim Wenders!
I have various book by Wenders, both photobooks and texts from his lessons or conferences. America is the last one I bought and includes the pictures of an exhibition we visited a few years ago. The pictures were very large and exhibited in a very nice historical villa (Vila Panza) and there were as well texts from the author which I reported on the catalog. To be fair I visited the exhibition twice and if you are curious to know why I explained it in this post.
I love how “clean” and simple are the pictures by Wim Wenders and also how each photo could be the starting point for a story that we can finish as we prefer.
My wife and I desired a trip through America, maybe a roadtrip as we have seen in many movies or we read in books. Now it is not possible and probably it will be not possible for a long time therefore we have to learn to travel through somebody’s else journey and their stories.
And an american journey together with Wim Webders will be surely a great exciting adventure!
And how about you, whom would you like to invite to drink a coffee with you?
As always you van click the pictures for an enlarged view and your comments are welcome, thanks.
In a weird moment a little bit of music can help: therefore I suggest you this video. Please enjoy!
That was a very nice idea, having coffee with Wim Wenders. And I hope you and your wife can come here for that road trip someday…maybe even next year, who knows? It would be wonderful to meet you for coffee up here in the northwest corner of the country. 🙂
That roadtrip…we say never say never !!! Great idea to have a coffee together one day!
Wim Wenders is a great friend at your coffee table. I happened to meet him a few years ago, in Los Angeles, as he was giving a speech and presentation about his latest movie about the current pope. It was most interesting to gain more insight of the making of this great movie. Wim Wenders is a real man, without attitude being a celebrity of movie makers.
Wim Wenders was in Milan as well for a lecture a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I was infromed only the day after !!!
Oh, sorry.

The same thing happens here in Norway. We are in a more open phase too. Most people still respect social distancing, but some just think the outbreak is over. Which it isn’t. It’s very true what you friend said about intensive care. As for Wim Wenders, I have always loved his films, but was unaware he had published photo books. I wanted to buy America, but it’s only available secondhand and for no less than 265 $…
Wow, 265…it s much…I could sell mine for…noi I cannot sell it! It seems some photo book get a good price on the secondhand market…another one I have from Wenders and it is beautiful is “one volta” = “once” .

I think in Norway you are less crowded than we are in north Italy and this should make things easier to contain the virus having less contacts.
Thanks for your words, much appreciated.
yes, i know… people are throwing caution to the wind…
my husband is still required to wear a mask at work though
and he still won’t let me go out.
i dearly hope and pray we don’t get a huge second wave!
I loved your post, and that video at the end had me captivated!
There are nice videos around, you know better than me! Our communities should anyway work to be ready in case a second wave will come…if you do not go out you have more time for your art 🙂
we’ll have to be very cautious also with our friends. but this week, if anything bad, we’ll meet with some friends just to drink a spritz 😎
Be careful, very careful and enjoy the moment, life goes on !
Your wife looks like such a nice person! And don’t fuss about not getting to America. I grew up there. Now I hardly recognize the place. Wim Wenders, Sally Mann, the Magnum photographers and many others have taken sometimes lovely, sometimes disturbing photos of America. These days they may all be more interesting than the real thing.
Thanks for your words, Simo will appreciate! And yes you are correct…these days many places are no more what they were or what we imagine they are. And not only America…
