Idee e altri pensieri, in breve

Un lettore affezionato attraverso il modulo di contatto mi ha chiesto dove prendo l’ispirazione per i miei lavori e se le fonti sono le stesse per fotografia e disegno.

A loyal reader through the contact form asked me where I get my inspiration for my work and if the sources are the same for photography and drawing.

E’ una domanda cui cercherò di rispondere un poco adesso e un poco nei prossimi post. Per adesso vorrei spiegare che il mio rapporto con il disegno è molto diverso da quello che ho con la fotografia. Praticamente fotografo da quando ero poco più di un bambino e negli anni ne ho acquisito una certa padronanza. Il disegno invece è una cosa nuova per me e sono ancora molto nella fase di apprendimento. La maggior parte dei lavori sono semplicemente …esercizi.

That’s a question I’ll try to answer a little now and a little in future posts. For now, I’d like to explain that my relationship with drawing is very different from the one I have with photography. I have practically been taking pictures since I was little more than a child and over the years I have mastered them. Drawing, on the other hand, is something new to me and I’m still very much in the learning phase. Most of my works are only…exercises!

Quest’anno, accidenti siamo quasi a metà anno come vola il tempo, ho fotografato molto nel mio quartiere a causa delle limitazioni dovute al covid. Ho cercato la luce, in modo particolare quella invernale, a volte morbida, altre volte dura e tagliente.

This year, heck we’re almost halfway through the year how fast time flies, I’ve been photographing a lot in my neighborhood because of the limitations due to covid. I’ve been looking for light, especially winter light, sometimes soft, sometimes hard and sharp.

In questo caso l’ispirazione arriva dall’insieme di immagini, non solo foto che ho visto. Mostre e libri lasciano sempre un’impressione visiva dentro di noi. Questo non significa che dopo uno cerca di rifare quella foto (e secondo me come esercizio non sarebbe male) ma che l’istinto viene un poco guidato dalle emozioni provate nel vedere foto di autori importanti. Importanti non perchè famosi e di successo ma per quello cha hanno saputo esprimere con le loro opere e per come lo hanno fatto.

In this case, the inspiration comes from the set of images, not just photos I’ve seen. Exhibitions and books always leave a visual impression on us. This doesn’t mean that afterwards one tries to redo that photo (and in my opinion as an exercise it wouldn’t be bad) but that the instinct is  guided by the emotions felt when seeing photos of important authors. Important not because they are famous and successful, but because of what they were able to express with their works and how they did it.

Prima del covid durante l’inaugurazione di una mia mostra fotografica mi è stato domandato se fossi stato influenzato nella mia fotografia dalle immagini di un famoso regista cinematografico e fotografo. Erroneamnete ho risposto di no. Ma io intendevo dire che vedere foto interessanti di un autore apprezzato a livello mondiale non mi aveva spinto a fare le stesse foto. Ma certamente quando parliamo di maestri dell’immagine, di visionari come Tarkovsky o Wenders come facciamo in un modo o l’altro a non esserne influenzati?

Before the covid during the opening of one of my photographic exhibitions I was asked if I had been influenced in my photography by the images of a famous film director and photographer. Erroneously I answered no. But I meant to say that seeing interesting photos of an author who is appreciated worldwide had not pushed me to take the same photos. But certainly when we talk about masters of image, visionaries like Tarkovsky or Wenders how do we, in one way or another, not be influenced by them?

Concludo con alcune foto recenti, sono un test per un possibile progetto. Un’idea ancora allo stato latente, per ora desidero verificare se può funzionare o meno, se richiede modifiche, migliorie o altro. Non sono il lavoro finito sono uno stadio intermedio. La prossima volta vedremo il passo successivo. E qualche altra parola sulle fonti di ispirazione.

I close this post  with a few recent photos, they are a test for a possible project. An idea still in the dormant state, for now I want to see if it can work or not, if it requires changes, improvements or other. They are not the finished work, they are an intermediate stage. Next time we will see the next step. And a few more words about the sources for inspiration.

Visiting the Picasso’s exhibition in Lugano Visitando l’esposizione di Picasso a Lugano ho pensato di fare un ritratto a mia moglie.  Ispirato dalle idee dell’artista ho deciso di fare un’immagine leggermente sbagliata.

Dopo tutto qualcuno ha detto che la nitidezza è un concetto borghese…

Visiting the Picasso’s exhibition in Lugano I decided to make a portrait of my wife. Inspired by the ideas of the artist I made a slightly wrong  image.

After all somebody said sharpness is a bourgeois concept…

Arles, the photos and not only the photos

Arles,  le foto e non solo le foto.

Tanti cose belle, tanti motivi per visitare Arles durante la settimana degli “Incontri della fotografia“. Le foto, ovunque, nelle mostre dei vari circuiti, delle scuole di fotografia, degli indipendenti. E  sui muri.

Lei era stata avvertita degli squali e delle meduse. Ma era determinata a trovare un’altra spiaggia.

 

Many nice things, many reasons to visit Arles during the opening week of the “rencontres de la photographie“. First the photos, everywhere, in the exhibitions of the various circuits, the ones proposed by the photography schools, the independent photographers who show their works. And the ones glued on the walls.

La luce, la stessa luce che aveva stregato Van Gogh rende interessanti anche quegli angoli che non hanno nulla di speciale.

The light, that same light which bewitched Van Gogh makes interesting even that corner with nothing special!

Da non sottovalutare gli incontri con simpatici appassionati fotografi, come… me e mia moglie mentre celebriamo la vecchia Kodachrome!

Not to under evaluate the encounters with other people, oft passionate photographers like …myself and my wife celebrating the old Kodachrome!

 La possibilità di conversare con un famoso fotografo oppure di acquistare un’opera da un fotografo emergente.

The possibility to chat with a famous photographer or to buy a work from an emerging one.

 Vedere tante immagini con tante storie diverse dietro, incontrare persone con le quali chiacchierare sui lavori visti o su quelli da vedere aiuta a mantenere viva la nostra parte creativa ed è il motivo principale che mi spinge a visitare Arles per gli “Incontri di Fotografia”.

E voi frequentate qualche importante manifestazione fotografica o di qualche altra arte di vostro interesse? O avete altre risorse per mantenere viva la vostra creatività?

To look at many pictures with many different stories behind, to meet people and chat with them about the works we have seen or the ones we should see is very important to keep alive our creative side and is the main reason for me to drive to Arles for the “Rencontres de la Photo“.

Short break without photo but…

Camminare in un bosco, con una macchina fotografica a tracolla o nello zaino è bello. La tranquillità, il silenzio, la luce senza dubbio sono fonti di ispirazione.

Walking in the wood with a photo camera around the neck or in the backpack is nice. The quiet, the silence, the light are without any doubt great sources of inspiration.

Ma a volte in queste mie piccole vacanze decido di non prendere con me  macchine fotografiche, in caso ho sempre l’i.phone per qualche interessante istantanea. Allora porto con me le mie matite e un blocco di carta. Il percorso per imparare a disegnare è lungo, sono solo un principiante, un assoluto principiante…

But sometimes during my short vacations I  decide to bring with me no cameras but my pencils and some paper, in case of need there always is the i.phone for any interesting snap. The road into learning to draw is long, I’m a beginner, an absolute beginner…

A volte scatto un’immagine con l’i.phone e poi con calma cerco di interpretarla nel disegno, può essere un paesaggio, l’interno di un pub…a volte servono più tentativi per avvicinarmi alla mia idea visiva…

Sometimes it is a quick snap from the i.phone which I later try to render by drawing, it may be a landscape, the interior of a pub, the house where we stay…sometimes more attempts are necessary to reach my visual idea…

In montagna quando il tempo è bello si cammina, ma se piove si rimane in casa e allora si può fare esercizio…esercizio, esercizio, esercizio dice il mio maestro…

When in the mountains and the weather is good you can walk but if it rains you have to stay home than it is a good opportunity to practice…practice, practice says my teacher…

Un giorno Man Ray mentre lavorava in camera oscura dimenticò alcuni oggetti sopra un foglio di carta sensibile. Quando accese la luce si accorse di aver inventato i Rayogrammi.

Io ho lasciato alcune cose sul ripiano dello scanner e mi son inventato uno scansiogramma 🙂

One day, while working in his darkroom Man Ray left a few things on a foil of sensible paper. Later when he switched on the light he became aware to have just invented the Rayograms.

 I left a few things on my scanner and later I made a scansyogram 🙂

Nachtlied op. 108, my diptych

Questa sera, seduto davanti al monitor ho acceso le mie casse ed ho ascoltato in streaming su Radio3 in diretta dal Parco della Musica in Roma il “Canto Notturno per coro ed orchestra” op. 108 di Robert Schumann,   con l’ Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia diretta da Claudio Pappano. 

Tonight, sitting in front of my monitor I switched on my loudspeakers in order to listen in streaming from Radio3 the “Nachtlied op.108” (Night Song) for chorus and orchestra, by Robert Schumann with the Orchester of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and conductor Antonio Pappano. 

E allora, ispirato da questa emozionante esecuzione ho scelto un paio di immagini scattate la settimana scorsa ed ho assemblato questo dittico. Si, il mio entusiasmo per i dittici non si è ancora spento!

Then, inspired by this event full of emotion I went through the pictures I shot last week and decided to assemble this diptych. Yes, my interest in diptychs has not yet gone!

An homage to …

 Da qualche giorno ci sono tanti colori in casa mia. Quattro colori nuovi. Sul tavolo del soggiorno. Non è un caso. Forse c’è un motivo dietro.   Una volta un fotografo famoso mi disse che il bello della fotografia è che permette di non annoiarsi mai. Hai un’oretta in cui non sai cosa fare? Prendi la tua fotocamera e inventati qualche cosa.

Since a few days there are many colors in my home. Four new colors. On the table of my living room. It’s not casual. There is a reason behind it. Once a famous photographer told me that one nice thing in photography is that you’ll never be bored. If you have one free hour you can take your camera and invent something.

 Dopo aver scritto questo articolo in cui ho spiegato il mio rapporto con l’America mi è venuta l’idea di rendere un omaggio, seppur  casalingo all’arte americana. E allora mi sono inventato qualcosa. 

After that I wrote this post about my relationship with America I got the idea to pay an homage, an homemade homage to the american art and therefore I invented something. 

E questo, sotto  è il risultato di questo primo tentativo. Da perfezionare.

And here, below is the result of this first attempt. To be improved.

Così si spiegano i fogli colorati che, attivando come sempre la curiosità di Simonetta avevo momentaneamente piazzato in soggiorno. A proposito, è vero, le case dei fotografi sono sempre troppo piccole! E il sacrificio autoimposto l’altra sera di non bere l’unica coca che c’era in casa!  Per chi fosse curioso ecco un paio d’immagini del “making of”. Devo ammettere di aver commesso un piccolo errore, perchè avendo a disposizione solo l’oretta di cui sopra ho adoperato la macchina fotografica di Simonetta e mi sono fidato dei suoi automatismi. Lavorando in manuale avrei avuto forse una maggior costanza nel colore della lattina. Piccola lezione per la prossima volta.

This is the explanation for the colored papers I brought home and placed on the table, making my wife Simonetta very curious. By the way, it is true, the houses of the photographers are always too small! And I also did not drink last night the only coke I had, which was a big sacrifice! For the ones very curious here are a couple of photos of the “making of”. I must admit that I made a mistake because having only the free hour of which we already spoke I used my wife’s camera trusting on the auto modes. If I had work in manual mode probably the color of the coke had been more consistent. A small lesson for next time.

Questo è stato solo un piccolo “divertissement” , però in attesa che le mie foto vengano esposte al Rochester Contemporary Art Center come ho spiegato qui, (grazie Megan :-)) mi ha permesso di giocare a fare l’artista per un’oretta! Ma l’idea di ispirarmi ad artisti che mi interessano non mi sembra male, anzi mi stuzzica. Anche perchè da cosa nasce cosa e le idee vengono assorbite per poi essere elaborate fino a svilupparne di proprie. Farò altri esperimenti, lo prometto! 

This was only a simple “divertissement” but, waiting for my photos being exhibited at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center as I explained here, (thank you Megan :-)) I played for a little to be artist. But the idea to take inspiration from the work of artists I like is not bad, to be honest is exciting me. And from one thing another thing can born, the ideas are first engrossed and than elaborated until we are able to develop  our ones. I’ll make other experiments, you can be sure!
