Pochi giorni fa, ho fatto un piccolo viaggio in treno. Solo pochi minuti ma sufficienti per godermi in relax la vista dal finestrino. La giornata bella, l’aria limpida ed i colori dell’estate mi hanno fatto venir voglia di fotografare. Ma quando si fotografano le rive di un lago si corre il rischio di cadere nel già visto mille e mille volte. E poi, in modo particolare da quando mi dedico sempre più al disegno mi piacciono le foto che non assomigliano a fotografie. E allora ho regolato la macchina in modo di avere un tempo lungo per non congelare il movimemento del paesaggio, opps in realtà era il treno che si muoveva 🙂 e ho fatto qualche scatto.
A few days ago i made a short journey by train. Only a few minutes but enough to enjoy in relax the view from the window. The beautiful day, the clear air and the colors of the summer let me desire to take a few pictures. But taking photos of a lake you’ll risk to fall in the “already seen thousand of times”. And than, specially since I’m more and more interested in drawing I like the photos which do not look like a photo. Therefore I set the camera in order to have a long exposure time not to freeze the movement of the landscape, opps really it was the train which was moving 🙂 and I shot a few frames.

Da dove ero seduto non potevo vedere cosa stava arrivando nell’inquadratura e questo ha aggiunto quel tocco di imprevisto che mi piace tanto…

Queste foto sono per me solo un piccolo esercizio, appunti per uno studio, forse il punto di partenza per un nuovo viaggio, non solo fotografico.
These photos are for me only a small exercise, sketches for a study, maybe the starting point for a new journey, not only photographic.

Un’altro piccolo esperimento, doppia esposizione con Holga. Chissà se è stata voluta oppure se mi sono semplicemente dimenticato di girare la rotellina per far avanzare la pellicola ?

In questa mia estate analogica non poteva mancare una pausa giocherellona. E allora quando Simo ed io abbiamo deciso di trascorrere qualche giorno al lago ho pensato di portare con noi uno dei miei giocattoli. Ispirato dall’estetica delle foto lo-fi di my analogue journey fra i giocattoli ho scelto la mia Holga.
During my analogue summer I could not miss a playful pause. Therefore when Simo and me decided to spend a couple of days at the lake I thought to bring with us one of my toys. Inspired by the aesthetic of the lo-fi photos from my analogue journey I choiced my Holga.
Un paio di righe per chi non la conoscesse: la Holga è una macchina fotografica di plastica (perfino l’obiettivo) semplicissima ed imperfetta che usa pellicole 120. Infiltrazioni di luce ed altre amenità danno foto abbastanza imprevedibili. Ultimamente, anche a causa delle dimensioni che modo di fotografare, chiamato toy camera (= macchine giocattolo) sta assumendo sono sorte due scuole di pensiero opposte su questo tipo di fotografia. Una sostiene che quando un fotografo passa a queste macchine è perchè non ha più nulla da dire e sfrutta questo strumento per sentirsi e proporsi come artista. L’altra è invece ritiene che se il fotografo vale anche con uno strumento molto limitato può dare risultati eccellenti.
A couple of lines for the ones who do not know it: Holga is a plastic photocamera (lens included) very simple and absolutely imperfect which works with 120 films. Light leaks and other amenities give photos which are … at least unforeseeable. In the last time, due to the increasing toy cameras phenomenon two opposite ways of thinking are born. One says that when a photographer uses this kind of cameras is because he has nothing more to say and uses this instrument to propose himself as an artist. On the other side it is said that even with a simple unsophisticated instrument if the author is valid he can get an excellent work out of it.
Se volete avere un’idea di cosa si possa fare con questi giocattoli vi consiglio una visita a queste pagine del sito John Stanmeyer . Da queste pagine è anche evidente quanto lavoro serio anche in fase di editing abbia richiesto un libro come “Island of the Spirits”: non basta avere una Holga e scattare qualche foto a caso! A proposito, dalla lista del suo equipaggiamento foto vediamo che lui ne ha cinque!
To have an idea of what a talented photographer can do working with toy cameras I suggest to visit these pages of the John Stanmeyer web site. From these pages it is clear how much serious work, even in editing and sequncing is required by a book like “The Island of the Spirits” : it is not enough to have an Holga and shoot by chance! By the way, looking at the list of his equipment we can see that he has five Holgas!
Davis Burnett è un altro fotografo che ha osato lavorare con Holga su di un soggetto serio: infatti nel 2000 ha documentato la campagna presidenziale di Al Gore. Le foto sono visibili qui, sul suo sito sotto la voce “Holga eye”.
David Burnett is another photogrrapher who dared to work with an Holga on a serious subject: in the year 2000 he shoot the Al Gore campaign, photos are visible here on his web site under the label “Holga eye”.
Ovviamente fra questi fotografi e me c’è un abisso, non dobbiamo dimenticarlo. Io, come ho detto all’inizio con Holga ci gioco. Certo, cerco di giocare seguendo un’idea e con una macchina semplicissima mi abbandono all’istinto, senza perdere tempo a trafficare con impostazioni, pulsanti, ghiere e menù vari. Come dice l’amico blogger Münchow in questo (ed altri) post del suo blog di fotografia creativa lascio il mio lato istintivo prendere il sopravvento. L’idea su cui lavoro delimita i confini in cui mi muovo. All’interno di questi guardo, inquadro e scatto!
Of course between me and these photographers there is an abyss, this has not to be forgotten. As I said in the beginning I play with the Holga. Sure, I try to play following an idea and with a real simple camera I give freedom to my instinct, without loosing time with settings, buttons, rings and various menus. As the blogger friend Münchow says here (and in other ineresting posts of his Creative Photo Blog) I let my instinctive side to take over. The idea on which I work defines the limits whithin which I have to stay. Inside these limits I look, frame and shoot.
In questo caso l’idea ha a che fare con la strada che è sempre un posto dove accadono tante cose interessanti. E poi è il tema che l’associazione fotografica di cui faccio parte ha proposto come compito delle vacanze. E allora vi propongo qualche immagine di quelle scattate in questi giochi estivi in anteprima. E le altre foto? Ma quando i compiti saranno finiti, naturalmente!
In this case the idea has to do with the road because it’s a place where many interesting things happen. And moreover it is the theme proposed as holidays home work by the photo association in which I am a member. Therefore I propose now a few images I shot during these summer games as a preview. And the other photos? But when the homework will be done, of course!
