I know: it is not perfect!

Lo so, non è perfetto ! 

Amici mi hanno chiesto qualche notizia sulla nostra mostra fotografica, io della capra lui della rapa. Nei prossimi giorni mi piacerebbe scrivere sul percorso che ha portato a questo risultato,  idee, difficoltà, riflessioni, scelte. L’esperienza è stata ricca ed emozionante. Per ora abbiamo preparato questo video bilingue (circa!) : accontentatevi!

Friends ask me news about our photo exhibition “io della capra lui della rapa” .  In the next days I would like to write about this experience, ideas, difficulties, selections. It has been a reich and exciting experience. By now you can look at this video (italian  and english, more or less!): please, be satisfied!

Siamo presi in questi giorni. Solo una piccola nota per dire che la mostra sta andando bene ! Vi racconterò, fra qualche giorno 🙂

Venerdì prossimo sarà il giorno. L’inaugurazione della mostra fotografica del nostro Progetto Praga. Le foto sono già tutte stampate e incorniciate. Ancora qualche ritocco nella sequenza delle immagini: vi siete mai accorti come cambiando l’ordine delle stesse foto (che siano appese ad un muro o incollate nelle pagine di un album non importa)  si può modificare il significate dell’insieme? E’ interessante ed utile pensarci! E può essere divertente provare…

Next Friday will be the day! The Vernissage of  our Prague Project Photo Exhibition. The photos have already been printed and framed. Still a few adjustments on the sequencing of the images: did you ever notice that changing the order of the same pictures (it doesn’t matter if hanged on the wall or glued on the pages of an album) you can change the meaning of the combination? It’s interesting and advantageous to think about! And it can be amusing to give it a try…

Progetto Praga: la mostra.  

Chi segue da un po’ di tempo questo blog sa che circa un anno fa Simo ed io abbiamo per la prima volta nella nostra vita iniziato un lavoro fotografico insieme a Praga. Chi non avesse ancora letto gli articoli precedenti  li può trovare, insieme ad alcune foto qui oppure cliccando “project prague” nella barra laterale. A noi piace camminare lentamente, fare le cose in fretta non è nel nostro (mio ?)  DNA ! Trovare il modo di combinare due visioni diverse non è stato facile ma è diventata un’esperienza molto interessante. Ora siamo contenti di dire che questo darà vita ad una mostra fotografica nel mese di ottobre.

Who follows this blog since a longer time already knows that  Simo and me about one year ago started for the first time in our lives a photographic project together, the so called    “Prague Project”. If you have not (yet?) read about it you can find the related posts and photographs here or just click on the lateral side under the label “project Prague”  We like to walk slowly, working in a hurry is not in our (my ?) DNA ! Now we are happy to announce that this project will give life to a photo exhibition in the month of october.

We are in Prague. The famous coffeehouses frequented by Kafka, the taverns visited by the writer Jarodlav Hasek, the breweries, the cabarets. All these places in the past have seen a crowd of people, a few conspiring against the regime, in the meanwhile agents of secret police and spies were studying each others. It’s a part of the old game of the history. But there have been as well  people simply  drinking a Pilsen following the idea “Io della capra, lui della rapa” which I try to translate in “I about the goat, he about the turnip” and means that important was just to chat, about anything, about nothing special, nothing specific. Just chatting. Prague, a city rich of humanity and mysteries, with a polished architecture and rough alleys and the feeling of a unique special place.

Adesso abbiamo il libro! Un bel dummy del libro di Praga! Una settimana impegnativa, ma resa piacevole dagli amici trovati, dalla bellezza della Val Trebbia e  da   un’oretta giornaliera di yoga . All’inizio le nostre foto erano  dappertutto in una confusione totale molto “creativa”. Forse non era molto creativa, ma totale si!   Nostro tutor in questo workshop era Machiel Botman, fotografo olandese. Raccontandoci sia l’evoluzione dei suoi progetti e come questi si siano trasformati in libri sia l’opera e i libri di altri fotografi ci è stato di grande aiuto. Guardare, pensare, parlare, confrontarsi, mettersi in gioco. Ad un certo punto ci siamo accorti che le foto forti  nel nostro progetto Praga erano i ritratti eseguiti da Simo nei caffè storici e che le altre foto avrebbero dovuto fare da supporto a queste senza entrare in conflitto. E allora selezionare è stato più facile. E anche decidere il formato delle immagini è stato una conseguenza di questa scelta. Pagina destra ritratto grande, pagina sinistra paesaggio urbano piccolo, per esempio. Ma un libro è come una musica, serve un ritmo. E allora in alcune pagine le foto saranno piccole, in altre a tutta pagina. Sul pavimento le pagine si sono allineate, hanno cambiato posizione, hanno dialogato fra di loro e con noi. Qualche volta hanno litigato. Ma alla fine la sequenza è arrivata. Abbiamo stampato, rifilato, attaccato le pagine una con l’altra, ideato le copertine. Machiel Botman  è stato molto bravo con ognuno di noi nel far emergere l’idea, anche se questo a volte comportava un piccolo shock iniziale. E condividendo la sua esperienza con noi ha permesso a tutti quanti di arrivare al risultato. Grazie Machiel, grazie tutti.

Now we  have the book! A nice dummy of the book of Prague! It has been an heavy week but the friends we met, the wild beauty of the Val Trebbia and not to be under evaluated one daily hour of yoga in the morning made it a pleasant week. In the beginning there were many photos everywhere in a chaos totally creative! Maybe it wasn’t  very creative but total YES it was!  Out tutor in this workshop was Machiel Botman dutch photographer who was of great help explaining us the evolution both of his projects and how these have been transformed into books. The work, the pictures and the books of other interesting photographers have been analyzed as well. 

Looking at, thinking, opening our minds, reinventing ourselves. And about our Prague project we discovered that the strength of the work was in the pictures of Simo, the portraits in the historical cafés and the other photos only had to support these, without entering in conflict with them. Than the selection became easier, as the layout. On the right page a portrait printed large, on the left page an urban landscape, printed small. But a book, like a song needs a special cadence  therefore there are pages with small pictures and pages with a full size photo. On the floor the photo started to chat each other, and with us. Sometimes they even argued. But at the end the sequence arrived. We printed, we bound, we prepared a cover. Machiel has been very good with each of us helping in find the idea, even if sometimes this could be a little shocking! But thanks to his experience shared with us we managed to get the result. Thanks Machiel, thanks you all.

Come sempre quando siamo in fase di editing la mia casa si riempie di foto, ovunque. Simo ed io prenderemo parte in un workshop sulla preparazione di un libro fotografico. Tutto quello che segue lo scatto. E ci stiamo preparando, stiamo facendo i compiti a casa.  Io vorrei lavorare sul mio progetto del “migrante” (non ho ancora trovato un nome definitivo, per ora va bene così, ma se avete qualche suggerimento è benvenuto). Se seguite da poco tempo questo blog  notizie sul progetto le trovate le trovate in questo articolo e altre foto sono anche  qui, qui e la prima in questo post dedicato a Ramon J. Sender. E’ un progetto cui sono molto legato e per renderlo più personale ho fatto la scansione di vecchie foto di famiglia, contenute nella mia scatola magica 🙂 e anche di alcune lettere scritte da mio papà a mia mamma nel tempo di guerra. Non ho ancora deciso come inserirle, ma farò delle prove.

As always when in “editing time” our house is full of photos, everywhere. Simo  and I will take part in a workshop about the preparation of a photographic book. It is not the first time, but now there is a deeper involvement. It’s about all what is after the click. We are preparing ourselves, doing our homework. I would like to work on my “migrant project” (I have not yet found the final name for it, by now it’s ok like this but if you have any suggestion it’s welcome). If you follow my blog since a short time You’ll find infos about this project in this post, adn a few images here, here and the first photo in this post dedicated to Ramon J.Sender. For me this is a special project and in order to make it more personal I   scanned a few old family photographs I found in my magical box 🙂 and some letters my father wrote to my mother during the war time. I have not yet decided how to use this material, but I’ll make a few trials.

Simo lavorerà principalmente sul “progetto  Praga”: l’idea per ora è di fare il dummy di un libro impaginando su una pagina la foto di una persona e sull’altra un paesaggio urbano oppure un dettaglio di questa bellissima città ricca di storia ed arte.

Simo will work on the “Prague project“:   the idea is to have on one page the photo of a person and on the other an hurban landscape or a detail of this beautiful town rich of history and art.

Ho già detto che per me l’editing delle foto è una fase molto importante del lavoro fotografico: questa volta dopo una prima selezione a monitor procediamo con delle piccole stampe che ci permettono di creare sequenze, accostamenti e valutare come le varie foto dialoghino fra di loro, possibilmente coinvolgendo chi guarda.

I already said editing is for me a very important stage in  the photo workflow: this time after a first selection in front of the computer we proceed with small prints which allow us to make sequences, combinations and evaluate how various pictures talk together, possibly involving the viewer.

E per finire vi lascio indovinare che sono i personaggi di questa foto, che ha più di 60 anni. Si, lo so, lo hanno detto in tanti, sembra una bambina, ma…

And to finish I invite you to guess who are the two person in this photo, older than 60 years. Yes, I know it, many others already said, she resemble a little girl, but…

Back home, relax with music

Vacanza finita. Siamo tornati a casa. In attesa che il laboratorio sviluppi e stampi le foto da questa vacanza tutta a pellicola (i filmosauro ha colpito ancora) valuto un poco foto di Praga, pensando a come sviluppare la  prossima parte di questo progetto. E per rilassarmi ascolto un po’ di musica. Vi avevo già detto che amo la musica, anche se non so suonare, ahimé! Musica? Ok, allora vi propongo un paio di foto …

Holidays are over. Back home. Waiting that the lab develop and print my holidays photos from this experience “film only” , yes the filmosaur did it again, I’m evaluating the pictures for the Prague Project, thinking how to plan the next step. And to relax I’m listening to some music. I already told you that I love music, but I’m not able to play it 😦 Music? Ok, here are a couple of pictures…

Vi ho detto che c’erano tanti turisti? Tutti di corsa curiosi di vedere, di esserci, di conoscere…

Did I tell you that there were many tourists ? They were all rushing, curious to see, to be there, to understand…

Erano anche simpatici …they were even nice…

Ma a volte senti il bisogno di un po’ di tranquillità, da gustare in solitudine. Vedi una porta che ti sembra amica ed entri.

But sometimes you feel the need of a little bit of calm, to enjoy alone. You see a door which seems to be friendly and you enter.

E allora ti accorgi che anche se sei lontano da casa questo è il tuo mondo. O almeno il mondo dove ti piace essere.

And then you realize that even if you are far away from home this is your world. At least the world where you like to be.

Ti sembra di incontrare dei vecchi amici. Li guardi in faccia e loro guardano te e subito ti viene voglia di parlar loro.

It seems you to meet a few old friends. You look at them and the look at you  and soon you desire to speak with  them.

Devo ammettere di avere una sorta di dipendenza dai libri. Amo guardarli, toccarli, sfogliarli, desiderarli. E leggerli.

I have to admite to have an addiction to the books. I love to look at them, touch them, glance through them, read them. And of course to read them.
