Yes, the moon

Me la ricordo bene quella  notte di cinquant’anni fa. Insieme alla mia famiglia ero rimasto  sveglio fino alle prime ore del mattino per assistere e sentirmi partecipe di quel momento speciale.

Ricordo anche che avevo un po’ di senso di colpa perché pochi giorni dopo avrei dovuto dare un esame all’università e quello ero tempo sottratto allo studio. Ma ne valeva la pena, in ogni caso all’esame presi 27/30.

I remember well that night fifty years ago. I waited with my family all the night long till the first hours in the morning for the special moment, when I wanted somehow to be present, to witness it.

I also remember I was feeling a little guilty because a few days later I had an examination at the university and this was time subratcted to the study. But it was worthwhile, anyway I passed the examination with 27/30.

Snow? Yes, please :-)

Neve? Si, grazie 🙂

Un pomeriggio d’inverno un paio di anni fa. Inizia a scendere qualche fiocco di neve. L’aspettavo da tempo. Prendo la mia Holga, scendo in strada. Diciamo che il mio quartiere non è molto fotogenico, non c’è niente di speciale. Ma è dove io e mia moglie viviamo. Ci piace. E questa spruzzata di neve gli cambia aspetto. Scatto un rullo. Il giorno dopo sarà tutto scomparso, da quel pomeriggio niente più neve.

In a winter afternoon a couple of years ago. Snow flakes start to  fall. I grab my Holga and go down, into the street. Actually my district is not very photogenic, nothing special around. But it’s where I live together with my wife. We like this place. And this sprinkling of snow change its look enough to make it photogenic. I shoot a roll. Next day it will all gone, since that afternoon no more snow.

In queste giornate calde, troppo calde per i miei gusti, riguardare queste foto mi rinfresca un poco. Ed è anche per questo che amo la fotografia! In questo caso una fotografia semplice, senza fronzoli.

E voi come combattete le condizioni meteo che non amate?

In these hot days, too hot for my taste, I find that looking at these photos is…refreshing! It’s also for this that I love photography! In this case a very simple photography without gimmicks.

And how do you fight the meteo situations you do not like?

Mia moglie Simo ama fotografare, infatti fa parte della mia stessa associazione fotografica.

Associazione che come ogni anno, alla chiusura dell’anno sociale organizza una mostra con  foto degli iscritti. Quest’anno era richiesto un lavoro sul cibo lasciando ai vari fotografi la possibilità di interpretarlo proprio piacimento nella maggior libertà.

Simo ha scelto di presentare una piccola picture story sul formaggio (che a noi piace molto!) illustrando un poco la catena alimentare. Io ho aiutato solo nella selezione e nella stampa delle foto. Il risultato lo potete vedere anche voi, se avete commenti sono benvenuti, grazie.

My wife Simo loves photography and she’s member in the same photo association I’m in.

This association organizes each year a social event with the photos of the members. This time it was requested a work about “food” leaving total freedom to each photographer to develop the theme in his or her own way. Simo decided to show a small picture story about cheese (we like to eat cheese!) describing the food chain. She took all the photos where I helped a little bit in the editing and printing. You can see the final work yourself. Comments are as always very appreciated, thanks.

Qualche giorno fa scrissi questo articolo sulla mia ricerca dell’imperfezione fotografica. Recentemente sono stato in un posto speciale, a voi riconoscerlo (!) e ho approfittato per qualche esperimento. Anche perché essendo una città talmente conosciuta, già fotografata in tantissimi stili diversi non avevo assolutamente voglia di aggiungere un già visto mille volte alla mia libreria fotografica.

 A few days ago I wrote this post about my research for the photographic imperfection. Recently I have been in a special place, up to you to guess where (!) and I took the opportunity for a couple of experiments. Being in a place which is so well known worldwide, which has been photographed so many times by so many photographers in different styles I absolutely didn’t like to add to my collection an already seen one thousand times to my photo library.

Oggi condivido con voi il primo esperimento, tutto digitale (vi ho detto che sono flessibile e non sempre agisco da filmosauro?). La luce era diffusa e mi ha facilitato nel rendere i colori con una tonalità un po’ da acquarello (questa è l’influenza delle lezioni di disegno che sto prendendo).

Today I’m pleased to share with you the first experiment, all digital (did I tell you I’m flexible and not always a filmosaur?). The light was soft thanks to the clouds and made easier to get the colors with a tone of the watercolors (it’s the result of my drawing lessons).

Come ho scritto l’altra volta ho cercato di ottenere l’effetto direttamente in macchina selezionando gli iso più bassi, aprendo tutto il diaframma e impostando la messa a fuoco sulla distanza minima.

As I wrote in the other post I tried to obtain the effect directly in camera selecting very low iso, maximum aperture and minimum focus distance.

Winter, snow, post processing…

Sto lavorando alle mie foto della montagna, la mia fotografia lenta. Scansione e postproduzione del negativo. Solitamente faccio solo piccoli aggiustamenti. Nel caso di queste foto ho provato anche ad aggiungere una tonalità seppia che danno un’aria  di altri tempi. Come la vita nelle montagne. Ma anche un bianco e nero puro è interessante…sono indeciso. Voi cosa ne pensate?

I’m working on my mountain pictures, my slow photography. Scanning and post producing my negs. Usually I only make small adjustments. In the case of these pictures I tried to add an almost seppia tone to give an idea of “out of time”, old times. As it was the life in the mountains. But a pure B&W is also attractive as a photographer. I’m hesitant. And you, what do you think?

Due parole sul mio processo di lavorazione: dopo lo sviluppo inizio con una scansione in definizione medio bassa del negativo che mi permette una valutazione e una selezione degli scatti. In questo caso faccio anche una rapida messa a punto di luci, contrasto, forse un leggero ritaglio. Scherma e brucia dicevamo una volta! Insomma quello che facevo tanti anni fa in camera oscura. Per farmi un’idea di come sarebbe la foto finita. E’ solo a questo punto decido quale scatto meriti veramente tempo e impegno per una accurata scansione e postproduzione per arrivare alla stampa finale, che potrà anche essere di piccole dimensioni ma dovrà essere ben  curata anche nei dettagli. Almeno nei limiti delle mie capacità!

A couple of words about my workflow: after development I begin with a low resolution scan of all the negatives which allows me a first evaluation and selection of the shots. In this case I also make a quick postproduction working on lights, contrast and maybe a slight crop.Dodge and burn we said once!  What I was used to do many years ago in the darkroom. Just to have an idea how the finished photo could look like. It’s only at this stage that I decide which shot does really deserve time and dedication for an high quality scan and post production to arrive at the final print, which maybe cab be small in the size but not in the quality, details included. Of course within the limitation of my ability!

Non potevo fare le solite foto di tutti gli anni con luci e colori. Sto provando a fare una serie in bianco e nero, lasciando le decorazioni in secondo piano, come fossero li per caso. Senza preoccuparmi di fare foto belle (come potrei?) sfocature o mossi non mi disturbano. O forse disturbano …così è, intanto noi continuiamo a correre …

I couldn’t make the usual pictures with a lot of light and colors, as every other year. I’m trying a series in black and white, leaving the decorations in the background as if they are there by chance. Without worrying to make nice pictures (how could I?) blurred or out of focus pictures, it doesn’t matters. It does not disturb or may it does disturb…it’s like that, meantime we keep on running.

I went into a (small) forest and…

Sono andato in un (piccolo) bosco e…                english text? scroll down, please 🙂

Qualche giorno fa, prima delle grandi piogge  ho fatto una passeggiata in un piccolo  parco non lontano da casa. Per fare un poco di movimento, tenermi in forma, respirare aria un poco più pulita del solito. Non intendevo fare fotografie (anche perché gli alberi mi riescono quasi sempre male) pertanto avevo lasciato le mie macchine fotografiche a casa,  in mano tenevo solamente i bastoncini da nordic walking.

A few days ago, before the heavy rains I went for a walk in a small forest in a park not far from home. Just to move a little bit, to keep my body working and breath some fresh air. I had not planned to make photographs and I had left my cameras on their shelves. In my hands just nordic walking sticks.

Molti fotografi amano parlare delle loro attrezzature: questa marca è meglio di quell’altra perché….bla…bla…bla… Many photographers love to discuss about their gear, this brand is better that that one because …bla…bla…bla…

Ma un altro  detto comune dice che la miglior macchina fotografica è quella che hai con te quando ti serve.  But another saying says that the best camera is the one you have with yourself when you need it.

E allora quando ero nel bosco e ho visto certe luci fra gli alberi ho pensato che grazie alla tecnologia odierna una fotocamera l’avevo con me: quella del mio cellulare. Quella era la miglior macchina fotografica in quel momento!

Than when I was in the wood and saw certain lights I thought that thanks to today’s technology I had a camera with me: the one of my mobile phone. That was the best camera in that moment!
