La cosa bella nel preparare un dittico è che si possono combinare due immagini simili per forma o per significato. Oppure due immagini molto diverse, per creare una tensione.

Questo invece è un dittico un po’ casuale. Nella mia ricerca della foto imperfetta avevo estratto dei piccoli dettagli da alcune mie foto e avevo provato a stamparli. Per razionalizzare al meglio l’uso della carta li ho stampati molto vicini, sullo stesso foglio. E ho visto fra le altre foto queste due affiancate. Ritagliate le ho lasciate qualche mese sulla mia scrivania. Decantare le emozioni. Ora ho deciso che si, è un dittico.

One nice thing when you prepare a diptych is that you can combine two similar images for what concerns the visual or the concept. Or two very different images in order to create a strong tension.

But this is a casual diptych. When researching for the imperfect photo I extracted a few details from my pictures and I tried to print them. In order to better rationalise the use of the paper I print them one very near to the other, on the same page.  And among the others I saw these two, side by side. I cut and left them a few months on my desk. To settle the emotions. Now I decided yes, it’s a diptych.

Lo sapete, amo i dittici. E non credo sia necessario andare lontano per fare foto. Un piccolo esercizio, sul tema del cibo.

You know, I love diptychs. And I do not believe to be necessary to go far away to make photographs. Here a small exercise on the theme food.

Di solito in questi giorni si fa il punto sull’anno appena passato. E io ho riguardato un poco le mie foto e ne propongo qualcuna che per qualche ragione non ha trovato un posto nel blog.

Usually in this time of the year people take a bearing on the year going to finish. I went through my photos and I post here a few which for any reason did not find a place in the blog. 

Dalla piccola ricerca, esercizio personale sulle finestre (di come è nata l’idea ne ho parlato in questo post, come è proseguita in quest’altro e anche in questo) propongo queste foto. Come sempre (quasi!) potete cliccare per ingrandirle.

Chi mi segue da tempo sa che amo i dittici. E allora propongo questo dittico milanese.

Who follows me since a long time knows I love diptychs: therefore here is one, Milan style.

Sempre chi mi segue sa che ritengo la fase di editing molto importante, e anche creativa. Ma a volte sono in difficoltà, riesco a restringere le scelte abbastanza ma il colpo finale diventa difficile. Come in questo caso, tre viste della periferia della mia città che fanno parte del progetto di “fotografia a km zero”. Adesso viene il problema: dovendone scegliere una quale ha un impatto visivo più forte?

Who follows since a long time this blog already knows also that I believe editing is an important part of the workflow of a photographer and it can be creative as well. But sometimes I find it difficult, I manage to make a preliminary selection but  the final cut becomes difficult. As with these three photos of the suburbs of my town which are part of my project “photography at zero km”. Now the problem is: if you had to select one, which one would you pick?

Secondo me quella verticale ha il suo punto di forza nell’aspetto grafico, con le fasce orizzontali che tagliano la parte bassa e l’albero che si staglia nel cielo. La foto con la bicicletta è meno forte ma mi piace per l’elemento umano che contiene. La terza immagine mi interessa per quella struttura in costruzione, sapete che sono sensibile all’eccesso di costruzioni sul terrotorio. Una vostra opinione è benvenuta, grazie.

In my opinion the vertical photo has a strong point in the graphic look, with the horizontal stripes in the lower part and the almost black tree against the sky. The photo with the bicycle is less strong but I like because of the human element in it. The third photo has that work in progress which makes it interesting, you know I’m very sensible to the overbuilding problem.  If you have an idea about these three photos it’s welcome, thanks.

Easter time, a short story.

No, questo non è l’albero di Natale, è l’albero di Pasqua! E’ vero, io amo la montagna e la neve, il freddo se non troppo intenso e allora se dove ho scelto di trascorrere i giorni di Pasqua sembrava essere a Natale non mi lamento certamente!

No, this is not a Christmas tree, it’s an Easter tree! It’s true, I love the mountain and the snow, I love even a cold climate. Therefore if where I decided to spend a few days in occasion of Easter it was more Christmas like for sure I’ll not complain.

Camminando lentamente nella neve abbiamo gustato questo paesaggio natalizio, la solitudine ed il silenzio.

Slowly walking on the snow we enjoyed the silence and  the solitude in this landscape.

Sembrava realmente di essere fuori dal tempo. Niente auto, nessun bus, solo le nostre gambe come mezzo di trasporto. E essendo la strada in salita abbiamo imparato il piacere della lentezza. Un passo dopo l’altro, lentamente. Anche perchè gli anni ci sono!

It really seemed to be in a different time, no cars, no busses. Only our legs as mean of transport. And being on an uphill road we learned the pleasure of slowness. One step after the other, slowly. Yes, because the age…

E alla fine della camminata si arriva in un posto accogliente, dove una zuppa calda è la miglior ricompensa per la fatica sostenuta.

Ma questo è un articolo “pasquale” e allora una visita in chiesa per una preghiera.

Voi sapete già che amo i dittici e ne avete visti in questi articoli. Così chiudo questo articolo con un mio “Dittico per il tempo di Pasqua”. Una Pasqua strana, un po’ Natale ma che Simo ed io abbiamo trascorso con gioia.

You already know I love diptychs, and you already saw a few of them in these posts. So I end this post with my “Diptych for Easter time”. Sure. it was a strange Easter, with a little Christmas in it, but which Simo and I really enjoyed.

Delle mie foto con la pellicola ne ho parlato abbastanza prima, durante e dopo la vacanza. E’ venuto il momento di vederne qualcuna, cliché o non cliché! About my photographs film based I spoke enough before, during and after the holiday. Now it is time to see a few ones, cliché or not!

Ma vi avevo detto che amo i dittici? Si, ve lo avevo detto qui. E allora ho scelto le foto che mi sembravano più interessanti e sempre perchè mi piace che le foto si parlino fra di loro ho assemblato un paio di dittici.

But did I tell you I love diptychs? Yes, I did here. Then I selected the photos I evaluated more interesting and I assembled a couple of diptychs, always because I like that the pictures speak each others.

Assemblare un dittico è un’operazione interessante: occorre decidere quale foto scegliere e pensare a come funzionerà, per esempio se il dittico ci comunica qualche cosa di diverso dalle singole foto e se questo sia sulla stessa lunghezza d’onda del nostro pensiero. Secondo me vedere un dittico produce sempre un piccolo sbilanciamento e questo ha un effetto positivo sulla nostra percezione. Ma forse è solo una mia idea.

To prepare a diptych is an interesting experience: you must select the images to combine and think how it will work, like will the two pictures together say something different than the single pictures and in this case will it be on the same wavelength of our thinking? In my opinion looking at a diptych produce a lack of balance and this has a positive effect on our perception.

Inoltre è anche importante non solo quali foto accostare ma anche in che ordine. Per esempio “austrian diptych 17-06” funziona in modo diverso di “austrian diptych 06-17”

Moreover it is important not only which photos have to be coupled but also in which order. In my opinion “austrian diptych 17-06” works in a different way than “austrian diptych 06-17” .

Concludo con un suggerimento: provate a fare dei dittici scegliendo fra le fotografie che avete a disposizione. Basta prendere due foto e incollarle sullo stesso cartoncino. Non solo è interessante, ma è anche divertente.

I finish with a suggestion: try to make diptychs using the photographs you have available.  It is enough to choice two pictures and place them on the same cardboard. It’s not only interesting but amusing as well.

A winter diptych

Dittico d’inverno             

L’ondata di gelo si sta allontanando, in città la neve inizia a sciogliersi. Continuando la mia ricerca sui dittici nel mio progetto di fotografia a km zero ho preparato questa immagine.

The cold-wave is leaving, in my town snow is melting. In my attempt to get interesting diptychs to insert in my project photography at km zero I prepared this image.

Kilometro zero non è solo un progetto, è un contenitore per le mie idee a distanza di camminata! Perchè camminare aiuta a liberare i pensieri. Pertanto sotto questa denominazione inserisco  anche le sperimentazioni che derivano da queste idee. La visione negli ultimi mesi del blog Diptychs di Camille & Natalia mi ha fatto spesso pensare a questa possibilità. Questa settimana ho cercato di fare attenzione a come la mia città cambia dalla periferia al centro.

Alla periferia nord c’è una complessa struttura che permette a ciclisti e pedoni di attraversare uno svincolo automobilistico senza essere investiti dalle auto. Come camminatore l’apprezzo molto, come fotografo è interessante ma non facile.  Da qui parte un viale con una serie di palazzi, che una volta erano anche  eleganti. Ci sono alcuni negozi per chi non ama visitare i centri commerciali fuori città.

Ma quando cammino amo anche osservare i muri ed ascoltare le storie che mi raccontano, con i loro manifesti stracciati, le loro crepe, le ombre che raccolgono.

Kilometer zero is not only a project, but a container for my “walking ideas”. Yes, because when I walk my ideas have more freedom. Therefore under this denomination there are also the experiments derived by these ideas. The vision in the last few months of the blog Diptychs by Camille & Natalia let me think about this visual possibility. This week I tried to focus my attention on how my town changes from the surrounding toward the center. At the north side there is since a few years a complex structure built in order to let cyclists and pedestrians  cross a complex intersection without being run over by the cars.

As a walking man of course I appreciate it and as photographer I find it interesting, but difficult. From there a “boulevard” goes to the center, on the sides old styled buildings and a few shops for the people who do not like to drive to the big malls out of the city. But when I walk I love to pay attention to the walls and the stories they are telling me with their old posters, their cracks, the shadows projected on them.
