Idee e altri pensieri, in breve

Un lettore affezionato attraverso il modulo di contatto mi ha chiesto dove prendo l’ispirazione per i miei lavori e se le fonti sono le stesse per fotografia e disegno.

A loyal reader through the contact form asked me where I get my inspiration for my work and if the sources are the same for photography and drawing.

E’ una domanda cui cercherò di rispondere un poco adesso e un poco nei prossimi post. Per adesso vorrei spiegare che il mio rapporto con il disegno è molto diverso da quello che ho con la fotografia. Praticamente fotografo da quando ero poco più di un bambino e negli anni ne ho acquisito una certa padronanza. Il disegno invece è una cosa nuova per me e sono ancora molto nella fase di apprendimento. La maggior parte dei lavori sono semplicemente …esercizi.

That’s a question I’ll try to answer a little now and a little in future posts. For now, I’d like to explain that my relationship with drawing is very different from the one I have with photography. I have practically been taking pictures since I was little more than a child and over the years I have mastered them. Drawing, on the other hand, is something new to me and I’m still very much in the learning phase. Most of my works are only…exercises!

Quest’anno, accidenti siamo quasi a metà anno come vola il tempo, ho fotografato molto nel mio quartiere a causa delle limitazioni dovute al covid. Ho cercato la luce, in modo particolare quella invernale, a volte morbida, altre volte dura e tagliente.

This year, heck we’re almost halfway through the year how fast time flies, I’ve been photographing a lot in my neighborhood because of the limitations due to covid. I’ve been looking for light, especially winter light, sometimes soft, sometimes hard and sharp.

In questo caso l’ispirazione arriva dall’insieme di immagini, non solo foto che ho visto. Mostre e libri lasciano sempre un’impressione visiva dentro di noi. Questo non significa che dopo uno cerca di rifare quella foto (e secondo me come esercizio non sarebbe male) ma che l’istinto viene un poco guidato dalle emozioni provate nel vedere foto di autori importanti. Importanti non perchè famosi e di successo ma per quello cha hanno saputo esprimere con le loro opere e per come lo hanno fatto.

In this case, the inspiration comes from the set of images, not just photos I’ve seen. Exhibitions and books always leave a visual impression on us. This doesn’t mean that afterwards one tries to redo that photo (and in my opinion as an exercise it wouldn’t be bad) but that the instinct is  guided by the emotions felt when seeing photos of important authors. Important not because they are famous and successful, but because of what they were able to express with their works and how they did it.

Prima del covid durante l’inaugurazione di una mia mostra fotografica mi è stato domandato se fossi stato influenzato nella mia fotografia dalle immagini di un famoso regista cinematografico e fotografo. Erroneamnete ho risposto di no. Ma io intendevo dire che vedere foto interessanti di un autore apprezzato a livello mondiale non mi aveva spinto a fare le stesse foto. Ma certamente quando parliamo di maestri dell’immagine, di visionari come Tarkovsky o Wenders come facciamo in un modo o l’altro a non esserne influenzati?

Before the covid during the opening of one of my photographic exhibitions I was asked if I had been influenced in my photography by the images of a famous film director and photographer. Erroneously I answered no. But I meant to say that seeing interesting photos of an author who is appreciated worldwide had not pushed me to take the same photos. But certainly when we talk about masters of image, visionaries like Tarkovsky or Wenders how do we, in one way or another, not be influenced by them?

Concludo con alcune foto recenti, sono un test per un possibile progetto. Un’idea ancora allo stato latente, per ora desidero verificare se può funzionare o meno, se richiede modifiche, migliorie o altro. Non sono il lavoro finito sono uno stadio intermedio. La prossima volta vedremo il passo successivo. E qualche altra parola sulle fonti di ispirazione.

I close this post  with a few recent photos, they are a test for a possible project. An idea still in the dormant state, for now I want to see if it can work or not, if it requires changes, improvements or other. They are not the finished work, they are an intermediate stage. Next time we will see the next step. And a few more words about the sources for inspiration.

Matisse, more about…

Matisse, altro…

A volte mi piace reinterpretare con una tecnica diversa lavori noti, come quello di Matisse che ho postato ieri e che potete vedere qui sotto. Lo scopo non è di farne una copia ma quello più semplice di rilassarmi giocando un poco. Adoperando una tecnica diversa, in questo caso matite colorate anzichè colori ad olio il risultato sarà diverso ma anche un poco più mio. Un rilassante esercizio.

Sometimes I like to reinterpret with a different technique a well-known piece, such as the one by Matisse that I posted yesterday and you can see below. The purpose is not to make a copy of it but  simply to relax myself by playing a little. Using a different technique, in this case colored pencils instead of oil paints, the result will be different but a little more mine. A relaxing exercise.

Se cliccate la prima foto in alto potete vedere il lavoro di Matisse dal quale sono partito. Per vederlo bene dovreste recarvi al Museum of Modern Art di New York dove è custodito l’originale. 2020 Christmas

Natale 2020

Caro Gesù Bambino, quest’anno sei un poco solo, con papà, mamma e due pecorelle. I pastori sono in lockdown e anche la gente del villaggio non può venire a trovarti. Ma se guardi bene ti accorgi che non sei proprio solo perchè noi ti vogliamo tutti bene. E quando tutti si vogliono bene tutti si sentiranno meno soli.

Dear Baby Jesus, you’re a little lonely this year with daddy, mommy and two little sheep. The shepherds are in lockdown and even the people in the village can’t come to see you. But if you look closely you realize that you are not really alone because we all love you. And when everyone loves each other everyone will feel less lonely.

C’è stato un lungo periodo nel quale il blog è stato silenzioso, un poco perché avevo bisogno di uno stacco e un poco perché  ero impegnato in altre cose. Avevo promesso di parlarne. Di raccontare cosa ho fatto, e tuttora faccio quando il blog è silente. Eccoci!

There has been a long time when the blog was silent, because I needed a break and because I was busy in something else. I promised to tell you about. To tell you what I did and what I still do when the blog is silent. Here we are.

Il mio tempo libero da impegni casalinghi e di famiglia è stato dedicato principalmente a tre attività: la preparazione del dummy per il mio lavoro sul wabi-wabi, il disegno (meglio. provare a imparare a disegnare!) e visitare mostre. Più qualche piccola escursione.

My free time (when not busy with family and the usual home works) has been mainly dedicated to three activities: the preparation of the dummy about my wabi-wabi work, drawing (better: learning to draw or at least trying to!) and I also visited a few exhibitions. And some short trips.

Pastels work inspired by a Cezanne painting

Oggi racconterò qualcosa sulla mia esperienza  con il  disegno. Anzitutto il tempo.  Si perché per fotografare un  piatto di frutta basta una frazione di secondo, forse 1/125 sec, o al massimo qualche secondo se come nella foto di sinistra si impiega una macchina con il foro stenopeico al posto dell’obbiettivo. Diciamo che si può anche tenere conto del tempo per preparare il soggetto, sistemare le luci, cercare l’inquadratura. Ma sono sempre tempi limitati.

Today I’ll say something about my experience in drawing. Before anything: time. Yes, because to make a photo of some fruits you only need a fraction of second, maybe 1/125 sec, or a few second as with the photo on the left side it is made with a pinhole camera (which is a photo camera with a small hole instead of a lens) . Than we must add the time to prepare the subject, to arrange the lights, to look for the desired framing. But these are not too long in most of cases.

Invece, specialmente se si è un vero principiante per disegnare una composizione di frutti occorrono ore. E magari alla fine si scopre che il risultato non è quello voluto e si deve rifare tutto!

But, specially when you are an “absolute beginner” as I am, to draw or paint a composition of fruits you’ll need hours. And it is possible that at the end you discover that you do not get what you wanted and you should do everything again. 

Ma quando riesci e vedi il tuo lavoro finito la soddisfazione è grande! Io sono solito appuntare i miei disegni con piccole calamite  sulla libreria metallica del soggiorno (lo faccio anche con le foto) e guardandoli alla fine scopro i difetti, gli errori e dove correggerli.

But when you manage it and you see your finished work the satisfaction is great! I’m use to hang my drawings with small magnets on the metallic shelves in the living room (I do it with my pictures as well) and looking at them I discover the mistakes, the problems and where to improve.

Imparare a disegnare richiede dedizione, tempo, volontà. La passione spinge a fare questo. Ma secondo me per imparare bisogna anche divertirsi, rilassarsi.  Io alterno disegni seri dove la guida del mio maestro mi aiuta a superare le difficoltà a cose più divertenti che faccio nei ritagli di tempo. E allora mi piace “giocare” con i colori. C’è qualche cosa di più divertente che giocare con i colori?

To learn to draw requires dedication, time, will. The passion helps in this. But, in my opinion it’s also necessary to have fun, to relax. I alternate serious drawings where the guide of  my teacher helps me to overcome the difficulties with more pleasant things for the free moments. Than I like “to play” with colours. Is there anything more fun than playing with colours?

Non sono ancora in grado di eseguire un disegno tutto mio, e allora cerco ispirazione nel lavoro di artisti che apprezzo. Libri, fotografie, cartoline, cataloghi di mostre sono spesso un buon punto di partenza. Negli ultimi giorni, forse stimolato dalla luce della primavera cha sta arrivando (anche se domani dovrebbe piovere!) ho trovato ispirazione in Matisse che ovviamente interpreto a modo mio!

I’m not yet able to make a “my own” drawing, therefore I look for inspiration in the works of artists I like. Books, photos, postcards and catalogs from exhibitions are oft a good starting point. Lately maybe because of the light of the spring around here (even if tomorrow rain is forecasted!) I feel inspired by Matisse, whose work of course I do in my way!

 

C’è un piacere sottile nell’avere in mano una matita, e  ascoltare il suono  della punta che scorre  sulla carta mentre lentamente si materializza il disegno. E’ molto rilassante dovreste provare per credere! Penso che quando si disegna vengano attivate zone particolari del nostro cervello e si è assorbiti completamente in quello che stiamo facendo, dimenticando pensieri e preoccupazioni varie.

There is a subtle pleasure in keeping a pencil in your hand and listen to the sound of the tip on the paper when slowly the drawing takes form. It’ s really relaxing, try it to believe! I think when we are drawing specific areas of our brain are activated and we are totally immersed in our activity forgetting troubles and other daily thoughts.

Ora mi sto concentrando sulla matita: è uno strumento semplice, facile da portare in giro, espressivo (sapendolo usare). Un paio di matite, un temperino, una gomma possono essere sufficienti per esprimersi. Ho anche una vasta gamme di matite colorate, acquarellabili e non ma sto sperimentano un approccio minimalistico: una scatoletta metallica con poche matite e cercare di trarne i colori che desidero. Vedremo come funzionerà!

I’m now practicing pencil: it’s a simple tool, easy to bring around and very expressive (if you are able to use it, I have still a long way in front of me!). A couple of pencils, a sharpener, an eraser can be enough. I also have a large range of colors pencils, pastels, watercolor pencils but in these days I try to work with a minimalistic set: only a tin box with a few colours and the challenge to get the colours I desire. Perhaps it works!

Fotografia e disegno: sembrerebbe naturale che io mi ispiri alle mie foto per i miei disegni. Invece mi è difficile. Credo dipende dal fatto che la mia visione sia diversa nei due casi. I soggetti che mi interessano fotograficamente non mi interessano come disegno. Per ora ho fatto un solo tentativo con una foto dal progetto wabi-wabi. Ma di questo parleremo un’altra volta.

Photography and drawing: it seems natural that I get inspiration from my photos when I draw. But I find it difficult. I believe it depends that my vision is different in the two cases. What I find interesting from a photographic point of view doesn’t get my attention for a drawing. Actually I only made one attempt with a picture from the wabi-wabi project. But we’ll speak about this next time!

Cezanne apples and B&W photography

Ci sono macchie che vanno dall’arancio al rosso al bordò, con qualche colpo di verde e una botta di giallo.

There are spots from orange to red to dark burgundy with splash of green and a punch of yellow.

Oppure linee grigie , alcune più chiare, altre più scure, forse nere. Non ci sono colori.

Or there is a grey line, and other lines, some darker, some softer, but all grey with no color.  

 

Oggi iniziamo con un mio tentativo di copia di un dipinto di Cezanne, con le sue famose mele. E con un mio disegno a matita, anche questo un esercizio dai corsi disegno e pittura che sto seguendo.

Today we start with one of my painting exercise, in this case I tried to copy the Cezanne apples. And with a pencil drawing of mine, again an exercise from the lessons I’m taking.

Lo so, questo dovrebbe essere un blog sulla fotografia, cosa centrano queste immagini?

I know, this is supposed to be a photography blog, why these images?

Qualche giorno fa chiacchieravo con un amico che mi ha chiesto se preferissi la fotografia in bianco e nero oppure quella a colori e quali differenze ci trovassi. Domanda semplice ma risposta complicata. In effetti io fotografo sia a colori sia in B&N.

A few days ago I was chatting with a friend when he suddenly asked me if I prefer color or black and white photography and which differences I found between them.  A simple question with a complicated answer . In reality I make both, B&W and color photography.

Ora la domanda è: quando decido di fotografare in Bianco e Nero oppure a colori? Quali sono  le differenze?

Now the question is: when do I decide to photograph in B&W and when in color? Which are the differences?

In parte dipende molto dal momento, dal mio stato d’animo. Ultimamente amo molto il B&N, mi sembra che senza le distrazioni del colore sia più diretto. Ma è un’idea mia e come tale potrebbe anche essere sbagliata. In effetti un paio di mesi fa al Festival di Fotografia Europea ho avuto modo di ascoltare Joel Meyerowitz che ci ha raccontato come dopo aver trascorso un periodo con due macchine fotografiche, una caricata con pellicola a colori e una in B&N abbia deciso di fotografare a solo colori, perché una foto a colori contiene molte più informazioni. La fotografia è bella anche perche  le possibilità sono tante e ognuno può esprimersi come meglio preferisce! A ognuno il suo 🙂

It depends on the moment, on my mood. Actually I love much to photograph in B&W, it seems me more direct without the distractions of the colours. But this is just my idea which could be wrong. Indeed a couple of months ago at the  Festival of European Photography in Reggio Emilia I had the chance to listen to a talk by Joel Meyerowitz who told us how he spent a time with two photo cameras, one containing B&W film and the other color. After a few months he decided to shoot only color because a color photography contains many more informations than one in B&W. Photography is nice also because there are so many possibilities and each one can express himself as he prefer. To each his own 🙂

C’è una differenza importante nel fotografare in B&N e a colori, e secondo me è stata espressa molto bene da Alejandro Cegarra, Oskar Barnak Newcomer Award Winner in 2014 nell’intervista che trovate nel corto video alla fine di questo articolo. Alejandro dice che per lui fotografare in bianco e nero è come disegnare, ci si concentra su linee, contrasti, forme. Fotografare a colori è come dipingere, con i colori si formano volumi, si rendono le cose belle.

There is an important difference photographing in B&W or color and in my opinion has been very well expressed by Alejandro Cegarra, Oskar Barnak Newcomer Award Winner 2014 in the interview contained in the short video you’ll find at the end of this article. Alejandro says for him to photograph in B&W is like drawing, you must focus on lines, contrasts, shapes. To photograph in color is like to paint, you make volumes with colours, you make things nicer.

Forse perché prendo lezioni di disegno ma trovo questo commento di Alejandro molto azzeccato, ed è per questo che amo il bianco e nero, anche se ovviamente ci sono situazioni che richiedono il colore!

Maybe it’s because of the drawing lessons I’m taking but I find Alejandro comment very appropriate and it’s the reason for which, in this moment I love B&W photography. Of course there are many situations which call for color.

E voi cosa preferite, l’astrazione senza tempo di una foto in bianco e nero oppure l’emozione di una miscela di colori ben scelta?

And how about you, what do you prefer, the no time abstraction of the black and white or the emotion of a well calibrated mix of colours?

E’ un semplice schizzo, una maglietta rossa. Rossa come i pigiamini dei bambini annegati qualche giorno fa davanti alle coste della Libia. Rossa come la maglietta del piccolo Aylan Kurdi ritrovato senza vita tre anni fa su una costa turca. Di rosso vengono vestiti dalle loro madri i bambini che si apprestano ad attraversare il Mediterraneo nella speranza che in caso di naufragio il rosso richiami l’attenzione dei soccorritori.

Una maglietta rossa per fermare l’emorragia di umanità. Anch’io la vesto oggi seguendo l’invito di Don Ciotti. E voi?

It’s a simple quick sketch. A red T-shirt. Red like the small pajamas of the children who died drowned in front of the Libyan coast a week ago. Red like the T-shirt of the small Aylan Kurdi, found dead three years ago on a Turkey shore. Red is the color mothers choice for their children when approaching to cross the Mediterranean Sea with the hope in case of a shipwreck this color can be more visible to the rescuers.

A  red T-shirt to stop the hemorrhage of humanity. I wear a red T-shirt too today. How about you?

E’ da tempo che accanto alla fotografia il mio interesse si è rivolto al disegno e alla pittura. E non è semplice, imparare richiede tempo. Per fotografare una bottiglia è sufficiente 1/125 di secondo (più il tempo per sistemare il set, luci e sfondi) ma per disegnarla o dipingerla ne serve molto di più, e a volte alla fine ci si accorge che il risultato non è soddisfacente e sarebbe meglio rifare tutto.

Specialmente nel mio caso, sono un principiante assoluto!

Since a long time  beside photography I’m very interested in drawing and painting. It’s not simple, the learning curve is long and much time is required. To photograph a bottle 1/125 sec. is enough (plus the time to prepare the set, adjust the lighting, the background and similar) but to draw it much more time is needed and maybe at the end you realize you work is not as expected and it would be better to start again a new one.

Of course this specially applies to me as an absolute beginner!

A volte amo fare disegni seri, impegnativi. E allora nel mio caso un buon  maestro è di grande aiuto. E con un po’ di sforzo (un po?? magari solo un po’ 🙂 ) arrivo a fare  qualche cosa di interessante. Dicevo un buon maestro, impegno e tanto tempo. Riprodurre da una fotografia prima a matita e dopo a sanguigna il capoccione del David mi ha impegnato per circa un trimestre! Ma saper disegnare è la base anche per quei lavori dove il disegno esatto non serve. Credo sia così!

Sometimes I love to draw seriously, with  dedication. And in my case a good teacher is of great help. And  putting a little bit of effort in it (a little bit? I wish it were just a little 🙂 ) I manage to produce something interesting. So, a good teacher, dedication and a lot of time. To reproduce from a picture the “big head” of David first using a pencil and later with sanguine took me three months! But learning to draw is in my opinion the basis also for works which do not requires it.

Ma questo dovrebbe essere essenzialmente un blog di fotografia e vi chiedete cosa ci azzecchino questi pensieri. E’ semplice, o forse no, disegno o pittura e fotografia sono attività diverse ma anche con molto in comune. Mi ci ha fatto penare un amico che recentemente mi ha chiesto appunto cosa avessero in comune e quale io preferissi. Potrei dare una risposta semplice ma preferisco prendere l’occasione per rifletterci e parlarne con voi.

Un pensiero per finire:  un semplice schizzo può essere ricordo di un particolare momento in un certo posto…visto tempo dopo ci fa ringiovanire! Non male, vero!

But this should be a blog about photography and you could ask why there are these thoughts. It’s simple, or maybe not, drawing or painting and making photographs are very different activities but also share many aspects. It was a friend who recently asked me what did I find they share and which one do I prefer. I could give a simple answer but I prefer to take this opportunity to think about a discuss my thoughts with you.

One thought at the end: a simple sketch can be a fond memory  of a good moment in a particular place…seen later it can let us feel younger! Not bad, isn’t it?
