Questa è la zine che ho realizzato ultimamente. Oggi vorrei raccontarne la storia, l’idea e la realizzazione e il perchè una zine cartacea a bassa fedeltà  in un mondo digitale connesso via internet.

This is a zine I made short time ago. Today I would like to tell you its story, the idea and the realisation and why a paper made low-fi zine in a digital world so much connected via internet.

Alla fine dell’estate scorsa mia moglie ed io abbiamo deciso di trascorrere qualche giorno sul lago di Como, in Tremezzina. E’ una zona che frequentiamo da molti anni e dove nell’albergo condotto sempre dalla stessa famiglia ci sentiamo a casa. C’è quiete e la vista è bellissima.

At the end of last summer my wife and I decided to spend a few days on Lake Como, in Tremezzina. It is an area we have been frequenting for many years and where in the hotel always conducted by the same family we feel at home. It is quiet and the view is beautiful.

Ovviamente appasionato di fotografia ho pensato di fare alcune foto, ma mi sono posto un problema: come fotografare un posto già fotografato da me moltissime volte senza ripetermi?

Obviously as a photography enthusiast, I thought of taking some photos, but I faced a problem: how to photograph a place that has already been photographed by me many times without repeating myself?

La risposta mi è arrivata sfogliando un libro di Karl Lagerfeld, “Fotografie” e guardando le sue foto della Fontana di Trevi: il contrasto fra la fluidità dell’acqua e l’immobilità della pietra potevano essere il punto di partenza anche delle mie foto.

The answer came when I was  browsing through a book by Karl Lagerfeld “Fotografie”  and looking at his pictures of the Trevi’s Fountain: the contrast between the fluidity of the water and the stillness of stone could be the starting point of my pictures.

Quano penso a un progetto prendo sempre degli appunti. Evitare (se possibile) di fare cartoline, cioè foto già viste tantissime volte, cercare fontane e lavatoi, piccoli corsi d’acqua, vicoli, entieri, dettagli di vechie case, senza dimanticare le tartarughe che ci sono nella  vasca di fronte alla Chiesa di S.Lorenzo.

When I think about a project I always take notes. Avoid (if possible) making postcards, that is, photos that have already been seen so many times, look for fountains and washtubs, small streams, alleys, paths, details of old houses, not forgetting the turtles that are in the pond in front of the Church of St. Lawrence.

Volevo anche che le foto avessero un “look” loro,  personale. Allora ho deciso di fotografare su pellicola in B&N. Un kit leggero, dopotutto era una vacanza: una macchina con un obiettivo (focale fissa per i lettori più tecnici) e un altro piccolo obiettivo nella borsa. Semplicemente. Senza complicazioni. Come sempre quando fotografo.

I also wanted the photos to have a “look” of their own, personal. So I decided to shoot on film in B&W. A light kit, after all it was a vacation: a camera with one lens (fixed focal length for the more technical readers) and another small lens in the bag. Simply. Uncomplicated. As always when I take photos.

Fatte le foto, tornati a casa, sviluppate e scansionate le pellicole ho fatto una serie di piccole stampe. A questo punto mi sono chiesto come procedere. Chi segue questo blog da tempo conosce già quanto a me piaccia la fotografia stampata, la foto tangibile che si può tenere in mano. E’ vero, internet offre molte possibiltà per condividere i propri lavori e questo blog ne fa parte. E ne sono contento. Però io credo  che una fotografia stampata, un oggetto fisico, un libro o una rivista offrano un modo diverso di fruizione. La lentezza nel guardarla o nello sfogliarne le pagine, il tatto della carta, il suono delle pagine di una rivista quando vengono girate fanno parte di un’altra altra esperienza. Non voglio dire un’esperienza migliore, dico semplicemente diversa  che io valuto importante e piacevole.

After having taken the photos, returned home, developed and scanned the films, I made a series of small prints. At this point I wondered how to proceed. Those who have been following this blog for some time already know how much I like printed photography, the tangible object that you can hold in your hand. True, the Internet offers many opportunities to share one’s work, and this blog is part of it. And I’m glad for that. But I believe that a printed photograph, a physical object, a book or a magazine offer a different way of enjoyment. The slowness of looking at it or flipping through its pages, the feel of the paper, the sound of the pages of a magazine when turned are part of another experience. I don’t mean a better experience, I simply mean different which I think is important and enjoyable.

Allora ho deciso di presentare questo lavoro in forma di piccola rivista, che per me che provengo dai tempi (gloriosi!) del ciclostile doveva essere una “zine” tutta fatta in casa e senza troppe pretese. Così ho scelto un formato che potessi stampare con la mia ink-jet su un foglio A4 e che mi permetesse di stampare una foto intera su una doppia pagina. E per fare una zine a bassa fedeltà ho scelto una carta non fotografica, una carta da spolvero per schizzi ottenuta  da bamboo perchè mi piace avere quando possibile una dose  di attenzione ecologica.

So I decided to show this work in form of a small magazine, which for me who come from the times of cyclostyle (I guess it can be translated as mimeograph) had to be a “zine” all made in house and without too much expectation. Therefore I went for a size and a layout which I could print with my inkjet on a A4 sheet and where I could print a full photo on a double page. And to keep a low profile I decided to print not on high quality photo paper but on a sketching paper, bamboo made in order to keep an eye on the echological aspects.

Quando si mettono insieme più foto è importante sceglierle, fare un editing appropriato ma è ancora più importante decidere in quale sequenza e dove metterle. Due foto vicine possono rafforzarsi a vicenda oppure indebolirsi. A volte una pagina bianca di fronte a un immagine può dire molto di più che una pagina piena di foto. Il mio metodo consiste nel…provare, provare e provare ancora diverse combinazioni finchè mi sembra di essere soddisfatto. E se necessario coinvolgo anche qualche amico per avere una sua opinione. Siccome amo lavorare con le immagini fisiche questo significa avere nel mio piccolo studio (e non solo) foto un poco dappertutto! Ma siamo onesti:  in realtà questo è un piacere!

When putting several photos together, it is important to choose them, to do proper editing, but it is even more important to decide in what sequence and where to put them. Two photos close together can either strengthen each other or weaken. Sometimes a blank page in front of an image can say a lot more than a page full of photos. My method is to…try, try and try again different combinations until I feel I am satisfied. And if necessary I also involve a few friends to get their opinion. Since I love working with physical images this means having in my small studio (and not only there) photos all over the place! But let’s be honest: this is actually a pleasure!

A queto punto mancava solo qualche parola per rendere meglio  la storia: non troppe per lasciare il racconto alle immagine, dopotutto amo esprimermi con la fotografia!

Now were only missing a few words to complete the story: not many because I wanted to leave the narrative to the pictures, after all I love to exprime myself with the photography!

Stampare, tagliare, rifilare, piegare e assemblare le pagine è stata parte del divertimento. Di questa prima “edizione” ho fatto circa 30 copie che ho distribuito ad amici e conoscenti un poco ovunque. Il loro apprezzamento è stato  per me la maggior soddsfazione, tanto che un nuovo numero dal tema per ora top secret è allo studio ! Rimanete in contatto!

Printing, cutting, trimming, folding and assembling the pages was part of the fun. Of this first “edition” I made about 30 copies which I distributed to friends and acquaintances a little everywhere. Their appreciation was the greatest satisfaction for me, so much so that a new issue with a top secret theme will come, soon or later ! Keep in touch!

PS: da ottobre quando ho scattato le foto ad ora è trascorso molto tempo. Abbiate pazienza, ma i tristi avvenuimenti che stanno accadendo, con il loro carico di morte, sofferenze, distruzioni e deportazioni non  mi lasciano sempre lo stato d’animo per concentrarmi su questi lavori.

PS: A lot of time has passed from when I took the photos to now. Bear with me, but the sad events that are happening, with their load of death, suffering, destruction and deportations do not always leave me in the frame of mind to concentrate on these works.

Nell’ articolo di una settimana fa c’era  la foto di alcuni negativi. Ora aggiungo l’immagine in positivo di quei negativi per facilitare la visione, se siete curiosi.  E un’altra foto da quella serie…

Work in progress, update

Negli ultimi giorni abbiamo avuto in casa dei lavori di parziale ristrutturazione. Ora muratori, idraulici e piastrellisti hanno finito la loro parte e tocca a noi pulire e rimettere un poco di ordine. Ci vorrà tempo. Ma prima di questi lavori siamo riusciti a fare qualche giorno di vacanza al nostro amato lago di Como. Dopo un terribile anno e mezzo con molti mesi di duro lockdown è stato bello.

In the last past days we had a partial renovation work at home. Now masons, plumbers and tilers have finished their part and it is up to us to clean and to tidy things up a bit. It will take some time. But before the start of the works we managed to spend a few days at our much loved Lake of Como. After such a terrible year with many months of hard lockdown it has been nice.

In questa occasione ho iniziato un nuovo piccolo progetto fotografico con tema acqua e pietre. In bianco e nero, scattato su pellicola. Ne parleremo nei prossimi post, continuate a leggere.

I took the opportunity to start a new small photographic project: the theme is water and stones. Black and white, shot on film. We’ll discuss it in the next posts.

C’è qualcosa di più bello che vedere un fogli di negativi sopra un visore? Si, forse il vedere almeno una foto finita!

Is there anything better than looking at a few  negatives on a lightable? Yes, perhaps to look at least at one finished photo!

A small break

Una piccola pausa

Per la prima volta da un anno e mezzo ho fatto una piccola vacanza. Anche se è rimasta un poco di tensione è stato bello. Avevo con me una macchina fotografica e un paio di pellicole in bianco e nero.

For the first time since one and half year I took a small break, a little holiday. Even if some tension was still around it has been nice. I had with me a camera and a couple of B&W films.

Nei prossimi giorni inizieranno dei lavori di ristrutturazione in casa: sarà complicato, abbiate pazienza se il blog non sarà aggiornato. A presto, spero in un paio di settimane. Grazie.

In the next days  some reconstruction works at home will start: it wiill be complicated, please be patient if the blog will  be not updated. I’ll be back soon, hopefully in a couple of weeks. Thanks.

The interview, part three. And a few pictures

Avevo promesso qualche foto dai provini dei quali ho parlato in questo articolo.

I promised a few pictures from the contact sheets I mentioned in this post.

Eccole! Fanno parte di un piccolo progetto che forse è solo un’idea da svilupare con tema la pioggia.

Here we are! They are from a project, perhaps only an idea to develop with rain as theme.

Non so quando riuscirò a terminare in modo decente questo progetto: da quando mi è venuta l’idea o non è più piovuto oppure la pioggia era talmente violenta da rendere improponibile l’idea di uscire per fotografare. Sento ancora la voce di mia moglie esclamare “non sarai mica matto a uscire con questo tempo!”. E probabilmente aveva ragione, meglio stare in casa 🙂

I don’t know when I’ll be able to finish this project in a decent way: since I came up with the idea, either it hasn’t rained or the rain was so heavy that the idea of going outside to take pictures was impossible. I can still hear my wife’s voice exclaiming “you’re not crazy to go out in this weather!”. And she was probably right, better to stay inside 🙂

Ma ora proseguiamo con l’intervista! But now let’s get on with the interview!

Domanda: l’ultima volta ci siamo lasciati con la parola emozione. Perchè dici che è importante e come entra l’emozione nei tuoi progetti?

L’emozione è importante perchè è il punto di partenza. Non riuscirei mai a fotografare un soggetto, una situazione o qualsiasi cosa che non mi emozionano. Che non mi coinvolgano in qualche modo emotivamente. Certo, potrei farlo ma credo verrebbero delle foto spente, senza vita. E allora anche chi le guarda non proverebbe emozioni. Non le troverebbe interessanti.

L’emozione può anche essere negativa, problematica ma nonostante ciò può essere lo spunto per un lavoro. Come nel caso del covid. L’anno scorso quando la pandemia è arrivata dove vivo ho avuto paura. Altro che emozione! Ricordo che il posto dove vivo, l’Italia è stato il primo paese fuori dalla Cina a confrontarsi con questo dramma. Centinaia di morti ogni giorno non lontano da dove abito,  i camion dell’esercito che portavano via le bare perchè non non era possibile cremarle tutte, si sapeva ben poco del virus o di come si propagasse, non si trovavano dispositivi di protezione come le mascherine, disinfettanti. Lavavamo maniacalmente tutto quello che entrava in casa. Una cosa semplice, data per scontata prima come fare la spesa era diventata un’incognita, avevamo paura a uscire di casa. Paura di chi incontravamo. O di stare in un negozio.

E allora ho iniziato a fotografare tutti i giorni, la vita mia e di mia moglie, il nostro lockdown, quello che vedevo fuori dalla finestra. E alla fine ne è uscito “Quei Giorni” un lavoro che rifletteva tutto questo. Ed è stata una buona terapia per superare quei momenti difficili. Ho di proposito inserito foto sia in bianco e nero sia a colori, foto sfuocate e alter nitide  perchè sono un poco il segno di come mi sentivo in quei giorni, con umore e sentimenti che variavano di molto anche nel giro di poche ore. Fotografare quello che ci coinvolge, che ci emoziona è uno dei consigli che io darei a tutti coloro che desiderano migliorare i risultati della propria  fotografia.

Question: last time we left off with the word emotion. Why do you say it’s important and how does emotion enter into your projects?

Emotion is important because it is the starting point. I could never photograph a subject, situation or anything that doesn’t excite me. That don’t involve me emotionally in some way. Sure, I could do it, but I think it would result in dull, lifeless photos. And then the viewer wouldn’t feel emotions either. They wouldn’t find them interesting.

Emotions can also be negative, problematic, but in spite of that they can be the starting point for a work. As in the case of covid. Last year when the pandemic hit where I live I was scared. What an emotion! I remember that the place where I live, Italy, was the first country outside China to face this drama. Hundreds of people died every day not far from where I live, the army trucks that took away the coffins because it was not possible to cremate them all, we knew very little about the virus or how it spread, we couldn’t find protective equioment such as masks and disinfectants. We maniacally washed everything that came into the house. A simple thing, taken for granted for us as buying food had become an unknown, we were afraid to leave the house. Afraid of who we would meet in the shop or on the way.

So I started taking pictures of our every daily life,  mine and my wife’s life, our lockdown, what I saw out the window. And eventually “Those Days” came out, a work that reflected all of that. And it was good therapy to get through those difficult times. I have purposely included photos in  black and white and color, blurry photos and very sharp because they are a little sign of how I felt in those days with mood and feelings that varied greatly even within a few hours. Photographing what involves us, what excites us is the advice I would give to all those who wish to improve their photographic results.

Domanda: un emozione forte per un lavoro forte. Per concludere questa parte dell’intervista hai anche qualche lavoro o progetto più leggero? Voglio dire più rilassante?

Risposta: certamente, per fortuna la mia vita non è sempre così stressante! Un lavoro  in pieno relax lo ho fatto durante due vacanze sull’isola di Ischia. Ho voluto adoperare la Polaroid per la libertà espressiva che questo strumento offre. C’è un altro progetto sul quale sto lavorando, è ambientato in quella parte del lago di Como che amo molto e che è la zone di Tremezzo. Ha per filo conduttore  l’acqua e le pietre, che in quella zona non mancano e vorrei fotografare in analogico e in modo non proprio convenzionale. Penso di farne una zine, probabilmente in due versioni. Vedremo man mano che il lavoro procede. Vorrei finire il tutto entro la fine dell’anno. Continuate a seguirmi per rimanere aggiornati! Question: a strong emotion for a strong work. To wrap up this part of the interview do you also have any lighter work or projects? I mean more relaxing?

Answer: certainly, luckily my life is not always so stressful! One relaxing work I did during two vacations on the island of Ischia. I wanted to use the Polaroid for the expressive freedom that this tool offers. There’s another project I’m working on, it’s set in that part of Lake Como that I love so much and that is the area of Tremezzo. It has as a common thread the water and the stones, which in that area are not lacking and I would like to photograph on film and in a not conventional way. I’m thinking of making a zine out of it, probably in two versions. We’ll see as the work progresses. I would like to finish it by the end of the year. Stay tuned to be updated! For now I show a picture!

A couple of photos and a few words from the interview

Un paio di foto e qualche parola dall’intervista.     scroll down for english text please

Caldo, decisamente. E allora provo a rinfrescare questo articolo con qualche foto di momenti a bassa temperatura! Iniziando con una foto scattata su una spiaggia ventosa l’estate di tanti anni fa. Era agosto e il vento era freddo, molto freddo.

Hot, definitely. So I will try to refresh this article with a few pictures   of low temperature moments! Starting with a photo taken on a windy beach the summer of many years ago. It was August and the wind was cold, very cold.

Mentre le pellicole dei due post precedenti riposano sotto un paio di dizionari per appiattirsi in attesa di scansione uno dei prossimi giorni proseguiamo con qualche domanda e risposta dall’intervista in corso.

While the films from the previous two posts rest under a couple of dictionaries to flatten out in anticipation of scanning one of the next few days we continue with a few questions and answers from the ongoing interview.

Domanda: nei due post precedenti vediamo che fotografi anche con la pellicola. Ma sappiamo che fotografi anche in digitale. Che rapporto hai con queste due tecnologie, questi due modi di fotografare?

Risposta:   molti  hanno parlato di questo, io propongo un mio punto di vista:  all’inizio abbiamo un soggetto che è più o meno colpito dalla luce. Alla fine avremo un’immagine di questo soggetto ottenuta attraverso un procedimento, chimico fisico o digitale. Fra i due c’è uno stato intermedio nel quale l’immagine è presente o su un supporto di celluloide o su un supporto digitale, semplificando molto (perdonatemi) direi su un supporto di silicio. Ora a me interessano l’inizio e la fine, la natura del supporto intermedio è una questione pratica. Non ci faccio molto caso.

Question: from the two previous articles we can see you take photos on film. But we know you also shoot digital. Which is your relationship with these two technologies, these two  ways to photograph?

Answer: many have talked about this, I propose my point of view: in the beginning we have a subject which is more or less hit by the light. At the end we will have an image of this subject obtained through a process, physical chemical or digital. Between the two there is an intermediate state in which the image is present either on a celluloid support or on a digital support, simplifying a lot (forgive me) I would say on a silicium support. Now I am interested in the beginning and in the end, the nature of the intermediate medium is a practical matter. I don’t pay much attention to it.

Domanda: questo è interessante ma dal punto di vista pratico delle differenze ci sono. Quando e come usi uno o l’altro? Cosa ti piace in ognuno di loro? Come influenzano la tua fotografia?

Risposta: certamente le differenze ci sono e sono importanti. Se voglio efficienza, se ho bisogno di alcune foto in fretta per esempio per mandarle a un amico allora mi rivolgo al digitale. Se programmo un lungo viaggio e non voglio portarmi troppe pellicole nel bagaglio anche in questo caso il digitale è la mia scelta. Ma  per un progetto a medio lungo termine posso considerare la pelllicola. Quello che mi piace della fotografia analogica è il procedimento, il fatto di dover fare delle scelte per esempio bianco e nero o colore. Ci sarà tanta o poca luce: quale pellicola è la più adatta? E molte scelte vanno anche ponderate perchè le pellicole e il loro trattamento costano e allora sai di avere un limitato numero di scatti dai quali devi portare a casa il risultato che cerchi. E poi c’è un altro importante aspetto: l’attesa.

Question: this is interesting but from a practical point of view there are differences. When and how do you work with one or the other? What do you like in each one of the two? How do they influence your photography?

Risposta: for sure there are differences and they are also important. If I want efficiency, if I need some photos in a hurry for example to send to a friend then I turn to digital. If I’m planning a long trip and I don’t want to carry too much film in my luggage then digital is my choice. But for a medium long term project I can consider film. What I like in the analog photography is the process, the fact of having to make choices like should I work in black and white or in color? There will be much or just a little light: which film is best? And you have to think when shooting: the films and their treatment cost money and then you know you have a limited number of shots from which you have to bring home the result you are looking for. And then there’s another important aspect: waiting.

Domanda: l’attesa?

Risposta: certo. Il tempo che serve per sviluppare le pellicole, sia se fatto da te o da un laboratorio è pieno di emozione. Ti domandi se le inquadrature sono quelle giuste, se le scelte tecniche magari anche quelle delle foto fatte in condizioni di luce difficile sono state appropriate, sono tante le cose a cui pensi. E quando guardi la pellicola uscire dalla tank oppure quando apri la busta del laboratorio o scarichi le scansioni che il laboratorio  ha fatto, allora il cuore batte forte. Per me la fotografia è anche emozione, altrimenti dove è il piacere?

Question: waiting?

Answer: sure. The time it takes to develop the films, whether done by you or by a lab is full of emotion. You wonder if the shots are the right ones, if the technical choices maybe even those of the photos taken in difficult light conditions were appropriate, there are many things you can think about. And when you look at the film coming out of the tank or when you open the envelope from the lab or download the scans that the lab has made, then your heart beats fast. For me photography is also emotion, otherwise where is the pleasure?

Domanda: emozione?

Risposta: io credo tutto parta da un’emozione! Non siamo macchine! Ma come l’emozione entra nei miei progetti, o anche semplicemente nelle mie foto ne possiamo parlare un’altra volta.

Question: emotion?

Answer: I think everything starts from an emotion! We are not machines! But how emotion is related to my projects, or simply to my photographs can be discussed another time.Suggerisco come sempre di cliccare sulle foto per vederle meglio. Dopo aver sviluppato è sempre un poco magico vedere che le foto ci sono veramente nella pelllicola!  Adesso è il momento di  valutare se qualche immagine merita di essere stampata…

From the lockdown time

Dal tempo del lockdown

Una foto dallo scorso marzo, forse aprile, durante il lockdown. La vita in casa proseguiva. Io ho voluto provare anche a scattare qualche foto su pellicola. Non avendo in casa i prodotti per svilupparla ho poptuto farlo solo ora.

A photo from last March, maybe April, during the covid-19 lockdown. Life at home continued. I also wanted to try to take some pictures on film. I didn’t have the products to develop it at home so I decided to do it now.

Non è piacevole ripensare a quei momenti ma non posso evitare di farlo. Potrebbero tornare. Dobbiamo stare attenti, tutti.

It is not pleasant to think back to those moments but I can’t avoid doing so. They might come back. We must be careful, everyone.

Per gli amanti dei dettagli tecnici ho adoperato una Nikon FM2T con pellicola Lomo Berlin 400 sviluppata in Ilfosol 3.

For the lovers of technical details I used a Nikon FM2T with a Lomo Berlin 400 film developed in Ilfosol 3.

spring is outside

Fuori il cielo è azzurro, la temperatura media e i segni della primavera appaiono un poco ovunque. Noi, mia moglie ed io siamo chiusi in casa volontariamente per evitare ogni possibile rischio di contagio. Ci stiamo organizzando per avere alimentari consegnati a casa nei prossimi giorni e si, lo ammetto siamo preoccupati.

Outside the sky is blu, the temperature not bad and a little bit everywhere spring is appearing. We, my wife and I are closed in our apartment, it’s a voluntary decision we took in order to minimize so much as possible any risk of infection. We are organizing in order to have food delivered at home in the next days and yes, I admit we are worried.

Il virus fa paura ma il comportamento delle persone fa ancora più paura. Nonstante gli appelli continui di evitare assembramenti e contatti ravvicinati so di ancora troppe persone che si comportano come se niente fosse. Ed è follia. Mettono a rischio la sicurezza di tutti.

The virus is frightening, but the behaviour of too many people is even more frightening. In spite of all calls asking to avoid gatherings and close encounters with other people I know still too many are around behaving as if it were a normal spring day. It is pure insanity, madness. And the safety of everybdy is risked

In un momento difficile io mi sforzo di ricordare  qualche bel momento. Come questo  trascorso con mia moglie e alcuni amici. Era il 2009 quando la mia associazione fotografica aveva organizzato una biciclettata in campagna in un periodo di vendemmia.

In a difficult moment I wanto to remember the good times.  Like this day I spent with my wife and a few friends. It was 2009 when my photo association organized a day trip by bycicle in the countryside in a grape harvesting time.

E’ stata una bella giornata per il piacere di stare assieme ma anche ricca di spunti fotografici. Muoversi lentamente permette di guardarsi attorno e cogliere dettagli interessanti, forme, trame, colori.

It was a good day because of the pleasue to stay together but also with many interesting photographic prompts. Moving slowly allows to look around and to catch interesting details, shapes, textures, colours,

E abbiamo trascorso anche dei piacevoli momenti a tavola! Altrimenti che gita sarebbe stata?!?!

And we also spent a pleasant time around a table! Of course, otherwise what a day would haveit been ?

Per gli amanti dei dettagli tecnici le foto sono state scattate con una Nikon FM2 su pellicola diapositiva. For the friends who love to know technical details the photo have been made with a Nikon FM2 on slide film.
