Poco tempo fa ho partecipato alla RoidWeek Primavera 2022 su Flickr: per chi non la conoscesse si tratta di una manifestazione due volte all’anno per gli appassionati di fotografia istantanea. Non ci sono premi o classifiche solo il piacere di far parte di una comunità e di proporre il proprio lavoro e vedere cosa altri appassionati fanno.
A short time ago I took part in the RoidWeek Spring 2022 on Flickr: for those who don’t know it, it’s a twice-a-year event for instant photography enthusiasts. There are no prizes or rankings, just the pleasure of being part of a community, submit your work and see what others with your same passion do.
Per 6 giorni i partecipanti possono proporre due foto al giorno, ovviamnte rigorosamente foto istantanee.
For 6 days participants can propose two photos per day, obviously strictly instant pictures.

Il piccolo orso lo avevo acquistato in un mercatino di beneficienza molti anni fa. Forse, anche se innamorato della sua piccola bambola è rimasto affascinato da Susan Sontag che lo guarda dalla Polaroid di fronte a lui!

I bought the small bear many years ago in a charity market. Perhaps, even if still in love with his small doll is fascinated by Susan Sontag who looks at him from the Polaroid.
In casa abbiamo anche una piccola aquila intagliata nel legno che io avevo portato a mia mamma da Hong Kong molti anni fa e un piccolo cigno del quale non conosco la storia.
At home there is also a small eagle, carved in the wood which I brought many years ago to my Mom from Hong Kong and a small white swann, whose story I do not know.
Con questo articolo concludo la piccola serie degli animali in casa. Fotografare con Polaroid ha certamente dei limiti ma secondo me sono proprio questi limiti che costringono a essere in qualche modo creativi. Siete d’accordo? O vi sentite più creativi quando siete assolutamente liberi?
Working with Polaroid has for sure limits but in my opinion really these limits force you to be more creative in a way or another. Do you agree? Or do you feel more creative when you are absolutely free?
A proposito di creatività: il mio progetto della zine procede, seppure lentamente. Devo ancora lavorare sulle foto, postproduzione, editing, layout e sequenze . Sto provando anche alcune carte diverse.
About creativity: the zine project proceeds albeit slowly. I still have to work on the photos, to make some postproduction and a first editing.
Than will come the layout and the sequencing. I’m also testing different papers.

Sembra esserci una concatenazione di fatti, alle mie tartarughine piace Warhol che per i suoi lavori adoperava spesso la Polaroid che piace molto anche a me adoperare. Tutto torna!
There seems to be a concatenation of facts, my little turtles like Warhol who often used Polaroids for his work, which I also like to use. It all adds up!
Molti mi domandano spesso cosa amo della fotografia Polaroid: la risposta è facile, e complessa nello stesso tempo. Mi piace la fisicità del risultato, un istante di tempo fermato e che puoi tenere nella tua mano. Ed è un’immagine unica. E apprezzo molto anche quell’estetica imperfetta, soprattutto quando fotografo in condizioni di luce non ideali o adoperando materiali scaduti (e lo faccio spesso!) che è molto “wabi-sabi”.
Many people often ask me what I love about Polaroid photography: the answer is easy, and complex at the same time. I like the physicality of the result, an instant of time stopped and that you can hold in your hand. And it’s a unique image. And I also really appreciate that imperfect aesthetic, especially when shooting in less than ideal lighting conditions or using expires materials (and I do that a lot!) that is somehow “wabi-sabi”.

Come avevo spiegato la volta scorsa ho scattato queste foto per partecipare alla Roidweek 2021 su flickr. Poichè amo lavorare su progetti, magari piccoli anzichè fotografare soggetti casuali mi sono scelto un tema, i piccoli animali che ho in giro per casa. Il cavalluccio con le rotelle è un ricordo di quando ero bambino. L’originale è andato perso negli anni ma un giorno, in un mercatino di cose usate ne ho visto uno praticamente uguale a come lo ricordavo e allora lo ho acquistato. E’ un poco malconcio, gli manca la coda e i finimenti sono rotti ma questo suo aspetto testimonia la sua storia, una storia reale e vissuta.
As I explained last time I took these photos to participate in Roidweek 2021 on flickr. Since I love to work on projects, maybe small ones instead of photographing random subjects I chose a theme, the small animals I have around the house. The horse with the wheels is a memory of when I was a child. The original has been lost over the years but one day, in a flea market I saw one practically the same as I remembered and then I bought it. It’s a bit battered, the tail is missing and the harness is broken, but its appearance testifies to its history, a real and lived history.
In questo post avevo accennato a una zine che vorrei fare: i lavori di rinnovamento a casa e alcuni aggiornamneti di tecnologia hanno richiesto tempo e non ho fatto progressi, ma ora seppur lentamente procedo. Rimanete in contatto!
In this post I wrote about a zine I would like to make: the renopvation works at home and some technology improvement took more time than I thought and I did not progress but now I’m starting again to work on it. Let’s keep in touch!

Chi segue questo blog da tempo sa già che amo la fotografia istantanea, la magica emozione della Polaroid. I giorni scorsi ho partecipato alla Roidweek, una manifestazione fotografica su Flickr per gli appassionati di questo tipo di fotografia.
Those who have been following this blog for a long time already know that I love instant photography, the magical emotion of Polaroid. The past few days I participated in Roidweek, a photo event on Flickr for fans of this type of photography.
Per questa edizione ispirato da un racconto in un libro di Chandra Candiani ho deciso di fotografare i piccoli animaletti che ho sparsi per casa, iniziando dal mio tucano.
For this edition I was inspired by a novel in a book by Chandra Candiani and I decided to make photos with the small animals I have around at home.
Attenzione: nessun animale è stato danneggiato nel fare queste foto!
Please note: no animal was harmed when making these photos!
Colgo l’occasione per scusarmi con i lettori abituali per la lunga assenza ma dopo i lavori di rinnovamento in casa ho deciso di cambiare il computer e ho dedicato molto tempo a questa operazione. In effetti qualche difficoltài imprevista ha richiesto più tempo di quanto pensassi per essere superata. Ora sembra tutto funzioni bene, dita incrociate!
I take this opportunity to apologize to regular readers for the long absence but after the renovation work in the house I decided to change the computer and I spent a lot of time on this operation. In fact some unforeseen difficulties took more time to be overcome. Now everything seems to work well, fingers crossed!

Nell’articolo di pochi giorni fa ho raccontato che fra i piaceri del fotografare c’è quello di condividere con altri i propri lavori. Recentemente ho voluto condividere la mia passione per la fotografia istantanea non solo attraverso il web ma anche in maniera più fisica con una semplice rivista che ho intitolato “Imperfect Moments” e soprattutto con una mostra fotografica.

A few days ago I told you how among the pleasures of photography I value very much the possibility to share our works. Recently I wanted to share my passion for istant photography not only through the web but also in a more physical way through a simple photozine titled “Imperfect Moments” and especially with an exhibition.
Le foto sono tutte Polaroid. Amo questo modo di fotografare per tanti motivi, uno dei quali è il piacere di avere “la foto” fra le mani. E’ una sensazione anche fisica, tattile molto diversa dallo scorrere le immagini su di un display. La foto fra le mani ti offre un contatto e ti domanda una relazione profonda. La guardi, la metti da parte, ne guardi un’altra, la riprendi. Quando sei stanco di vederla la puoi mettere in una cassetto, un album o una scatola di cartone. E un giorno salterà fuori …e ti offrirà un’emozione tutta vostra, tua e della foto.
Polaroid from a roadtrip, day 1: Germany, between Lindau and Nürnberg
The pictures are all Polaroid. I love this way to photograph for many reasons, one of which is the pleasure to have “the photo” in your hands. It’s a physical feeling, a tactile feeling very different from what you experience looking at pictures on a digital display. The photo in your hands offer you a contact and demand you a deep relationship. You look at the photo, you can put it on one side and look at another one, you can get it back. And when you are tired just leave itin a drawer, an album or a cardboard box. And one day it will jump out…and will offer you a special emotion, yours and its emotion.
Ma non è l’unico motivo: a me piace molto anche l’estetica delle foto Polaroid. Oggi la perfezione della tecnologia digitale sta omologando molto la fotografia. Tante foto perfette, ben esposte e nitide. A volte così perfette che sembrano senza anima. I colori delle Polaroid, le tonalità e le luci danno un aspetto quasi pittorico senza l’uso di filtri o interventi digitali. E l’imprevedibilità è un piacere aggiunto.

But this is not the only pleasure: I do really like the aesthetic of the Polaroid pictures. The today’s perfection of the digital technologyi is really homologating the photography. Many photos all perfect, well exposed and sharp. So perfect that sometimes they seem to be without soul. The colours from the Polaroid, the shades, the light give an almost pictorial without the use of filters or other digital manipulations. And there is an unpredictability which is an additional pleasure.

Torniamo alla mostra: in questo articolo avete già visto come è stata pensata, essenzialmente divisa in tre parti. La prima parte “Postcards from a roadtrip” è dedicata alle foto da un recente viaggio in auto dall’ Italia alla Norvegia e ritorno. Ho voluto aprire con l’idea del viaggiare in ogni maniera, in auto, moto, nave o come vogliamo attraverso sei photo che dopo essere state scansionate ho stampato su carta giapponese fatta a mano e montato in modo flottante nelle cornici.

Back to the exhibiiton: in this post you have already seen how it was planned, essentially divided in three areas. The first section “Postcards from a roadtrip” is dedicated to the pictures from a recent journey by car from Italy to Norway and back. I decided to open it with the idea of traveling, car, ship or motorcycle as we desire through six pictures which I scanned and than printed on japanese handmade paper and monted in a floating way in the frames.
A fianco di questa introduzione una serie di Polaroid, una per ogni giorno di viaggio. Devo dire che la mia fotografia è molto lontana dallo stile documentario classico. Non fotografo per far vedere quello che ho visto ma per ricordare e eventualmente trasmettere le emozioni che questa esperienza mi ha regalato. Ho volutamente usato pellicole diverse, bianco e nero e colore, nuove e molto vecchie addiritura scadute da tempo e che a volte ho anche maltrattato nella conservazione. Tutto questo perchè trattandosi di sensazioni ho cercato un aspetto un poco etereo a metà strada fra il sogno e il ricordo. 
On the side of this introduction I set a series of Polaroids, one for each day of the roadtrip. I should say my photography is far away from the documentary style. I do not make photos to show what I saw in front of me but to remember and eventually transmit the emotions the journey donated me. On purpose I used different types of film, black and white and colour, fresh and very old even expired (and which I sometimes mangled). This because being about feelings I wanted an ethereal look something between dream and memories.

Spesso ho anche adoperato spesso una macchina cui sono molto affezionato, una vecchia Polaroid sx-70 dallo specchio sporco e che lascia visibili segni specia nella parte più chiara della foto: potrei toglierli in postproduzione ma li voglio lasciare perchè sono la firma della macchina!
I used often an old camera which I’m very tied, an old Polaroid sx-70. The mirror inside is a little dirty and causes visible spots in the light areas of the photo: I coulkd easily remove them in postproduction but I leave them as they are because it’s the signature of the camera!
Ci sono altre due sezioni della mostra ma di queste parleremo un’altra volta!
There are two more sections in the exhibition but I’ll speak about them in another post!
