Christmas 2011
Natale è passato, con i suoi pranzi e l’aria di festa e ci avviciniamo alla fine dell’anno. Questo è per tanti un periodo di bilanci sull’anno passato ed anch’io ci sto pensando. La cosa importane è che io ed i miei cari siamo tutti qui, in uno stato di salute accettabile.

La situazione nel nostro paese è difficile ma dobbiamo affrontarla. Ma questo è un blog principalmente dedicato alla fotografia ed io vorrei ricordare le cose belle che mi hanno coinvolto in questo campo nel 2011.
Christmas time is over, we are approaching the end of the year. It is for many the moment to make a balance of what happened in the last twelve months and me too, I’m doing my own balance. The most important thing is that me and my loved ones are all here, in an acceptable health situation.

The moment is not easy in our country and we have to face it. But this blog is about photography and I would like to think about the nice things which happened to me in the this field during the 2011.
Aver iniziato questo blog è fra le cose più belle. E’ una soddisfazione ricevere commenti e condividere immagini ed idee. Ma soprattutto è bello entrare in contatto con tanti altri amici blogger ricchi di talento, inventiva e capacità da varie parti del mondo. Ognuno con la sua storia di vita, viaggi, fotografie ed avventure. Un’esperienza che arricchisce veramente. Grazie a tutti.
Having started this blog is among the nicest things. It is a satisfaction to read the comments and exchange ideas and images. But more important it is nice to know so many other friends blogger, all talented from various areas of the world. Each one with his history, life, journeys, photographs and adventures. The Roma Journey, J.Eskildsen & C.Rinne
L’anno scorso in primavera ho partecipato ad un workshop con Joakim Eskildsen organizzato da MiCamera. Il tema era “Fotografia Sublime, ovvero di come il segreto risieda nelle intenzioni del fotografo e non nell’evidenza del soggetto”. Joakim che ha studiato presso l’Università di Arte e Design di Helsinki ha illustrato il suo percorso di studi, gli autori che hanno influenzato il suo lavoro e la nascita e lo sviluppo dell’opera che lo ha reso noto internazionalmente “The Roma Journey”, resoconto di un viaggio di 6 anni attraverso il mondo e la cultura rom realizzato in coppia con la scrittrice Cia Rinne (oggi sua moglie). Ci ha anche illustrato il progetto in corso attualmente il cui tema è la propria famiglia. Ho imparato qualche cosa da questo workshop? Tanto, soprattutto che si può realizzare un progetto unico anche lavorando su un tema “consueto” se partiamo con occhio curioso e mettiamo determinazione ed attenzione in tutte le fasi . Per far questo dobbiamo imparare ad immedesimarci nei vari ruoli di committente (di noi stessi), autore, fotografo ed editor. Questa è la teoria, io sto provando a metterla in pratica.

It was spring when I took part in a workshop with Joakim Eskildsen, organized by MiCamera. The theme was “Sublime Photography, or how the secret is in the mind of the photographer and not in the emphasis of the subject”. Joakim who studied at the University of Art and Design of Helsinki explained his studies, the authors who had influence on his work and the development of the book which made him internationally famous “The Roma Journey”, a reportage from a 6 years journey in the world and culture of the Roma people . Journey and work made together with the writer Cia Rinne (his wife today’s). He also showed us he project he’s working on now based on his own family. Did I learn anything? Yes, a lot. Very important that it is possible to produce a special project even working on an usual subject if we have a curious eye and are determined and careful in each stage of the process . To do it we must wear various hats, client (of ourselves) , author, photographer. editor. This is the theory I’m trying to translate into practice.
Arles: una settimana di immersione totale nella fotografia. Altra esperienza forte. Per le mostre visitate, per gli amici incontrati e per le occasioni di fare fotografia. Ne ho già parlato e ne parlerò ancora.

The exhibitions we visited, the friends we met, the opportunities to make photographs. I have already spoken about and I’ll do again.
Il mio progetto “storia di un migrante” prosegue, con l’aiuto di mia moglie e di amici sono riuscito ad aggiungere qualche immagine (prima della selezione finale). Ho trovato scenari interessanti e mi è venuta qualche nuova idea. Devo ancora lavorare su questo.
My project about a migrant story proceeds, with the help of my wife and some friends I managed to add some more photos (before the final editing). I scouted new interesting locations and got some other ideas. I have to work on this.
L’associazione spagnola Visual Huesca mi ha coinvolto in un interessante progetto insieme ad altri 110 fotografi di tutto il mondo per celebrare i 111 anni dalla nascita del poeta Ramon J. Sender. E’ stato emozionante pensare di collegare le mie fotografie a dei pensieri di questo scrittore. Ne ho parlato qui.
The spanish association Visual Huesca involved me in an interesting project: together with other 110 photographers from all over the world to celebrate the 111 years since the birth of the spanish poet Ramon J.Sender. It has been exciting to connect my photographs with sentences of this writer. I have already spoken about this here.
Abbiamo anche avuto l’occasione di un paio di viaggi brevi ma interessanti. Il primo a Taranto per presenziare ad un’esposizione fotografica cui partecipavo insieme al mio gruppo. La sede della mostra era presso un vecchio studio fotografico non più in uso in un’abitazione tipica e che ha reso l’esposizione ancora più bella. Taranto è una città di mare attraversata da un canale sul quale un ponte girevole si apre occasionalmente per far transitare le navi. Per non creare problemi al traffico automobilistico questo accade alle 5 del mattino.

La luce particolare lo rende molto suggestivo. Non abbiamo potuto evitare di pensare che durante la seconda guerra mondiale le navi in partenza per le missioni transitavano attraverso quel canale, con i genitori dei marinai che salutavano i propri figli dalle rive, pregando che tornassero.

We had also opportunity for two trips, short but interesting. The first was to Taranto (South Italy) in order to be present at a photographic exhibition my photo group had in that town . It was in an old photographic study no more used in a typical house, location which added a lot to the exhibition.

Taranto is a city at the seaside and is crossed by a channel where a swing-bridge is opened sometimes to let ships transit. In order not to disturb the car traffic the bridge is opened for the ship at 5 am. It is very evocative and we could not avoid to think that during the WW2 ships in mission were leaving through that way, with the parent along the channel greetings their sons on the ships, praying that thay could come back home.
Un altro breve viaggio è stato in Toscana, nelle crete senesi. Fotograficamente si è impegnata maggiormente mia moglie, io ho solo scattato le foto del migrante in un paio di luoghi un po’ fuori dal tempo. Abbiamo avuto modo di far conoscenza con Dominique Bollinger, fotografo francese che vive e lavora fra Roma e San Quirico d’Orcia dove ha una galleria. Oltre ad essere un bravo fotografo fine art è anche una persona squisita con cui è piacevole fare quattro chiacchere. Le sue fotografie sono state pubblicate sulle maggiori riviste internazionali e su libri e le potete vedere sia nel suo sito che sul suo blog. Noi ne abbiamo comprata una in bianco e nero per il mio studio.
Another short journey we made to Tuscany, in the area south of Siena a dry area called Crete Senesi. My wife was deeply involved in taking photos where I only took photos in a couple of places out of times for my migrant project. We met Dominique Bollinger a french photographer who lives and works between Rome and S.Quirico d’Orcia where he has a gallery. Beside being an excellent fine art photographer he’s a nice man and chatting with him is very pleasant. His photos are in books and worldwide known magazines and I suggest you to look at, in his web site or in his blog. We bought a small B&W print for my studio.
Ci sono anche stati altri momenti belli con amici e parenti, abbiamo visto spettacoli e concerti, partecipato a pranzi e cene, visitato mostre. Io ho frequentato un corso di disegno, partecipato ai cine forum insieme a mia moglie, insegnato italiano agli immigrati. E ho comprato tanti libri (si, è una piccola dipendenza!).
Si, ho vissuto tanti momenti emozionanti. E’ stato un buon anno! Grazie.

There have been other nice moments with friends and relatives. We have been at shows, concerts, dinners, exhibitions. I took part in a drawing course, we went to movies-forums, I taught italian to the immigrants (it is what I do as volunteer). And I could buy many books (I’m a little addict to books!) . Yes, we enjoyed many exciting moments. It was a good year! Thanks!
