L’inverno sembrava essere solo una fotocopia un po’ sbiadita di se stesso, giornate quasi primaverili ci avevano fatto dimenticare la neve, che a dirla tutta è tanto bella in montagna ma terribilmente scomoda in città. Ma subito dopo quelli che per tradizione sono i giorni più freddi dell’anno, da noi li chiamano i giorni della merla, l’inverno è arrivato. Aria gelida e neve.
Winter seemed to be just a faded photocopy of what it should be, springlike days let us forget the snow which to say the truth is beautiful on the mountains but in our cities is terribly uncomfortable. But short after what for the tradition are the coldest days of the year, we call them “the days of the hen blackbird” and are the last days of january, winter arrived. Cold air and snow.
Fedele al motto non esiste cattivo tempo ma solo cattivo equipaggiamento ho deciso di uscire per la mia camminata con l’idea aggiungere materiale interessante al mio progetto “fotografia a km zero”.
Thinking that there is not bad weather but only bad equipment I decided to go out anyway for my daily walk and with the idea to add interesting material to my project “photography at km zero”.
In questi casi ci sono due rischi cui stare attenti: uno è quello di scivolare sulle lastre di ghiaccio che si formano su strade e marciapiedi e l’altro è quello di tornare a casa con foto cartolina. Che hanno un loro valore quando spedite come nel progetto di cui ho parlato qui, ma che fotograficamente sono meno interessanti. Io cercavo una foto più comunicativa, più artistica se mi passate il termine. In effetti un poco per il freddo, un poco perchè camminavo adagio per non scivolare non sono arrivato dove pensavo trovare soggetti interessanti e non ho scattato molte foto.
In these cases there are two dangers to pay attention at: the first is the risk to slip on the ice which covers roads and side-walks and the other is to come back home with postcards like photos. Postcards are not bad when sent worldwide like in this project, but from a pure photographic point of view they are less interesting. I was looking for something more artistic, if I’m allowed to use this term. At the end because of the low temperature and because I was walking slowly in order not to fall down I did not arrive where I was thinking to find interesting subjects and I did not take many pictures.
Credo che una fase molto importante nel processo fotografico, spesso sottovalutata sia quella dell’editing. La selezione è fondamentale per il risultato finale. Ed allora oggi vorrei condividere con voi questo mio processo. L’ho già detto in questo articolo a proposito dei miei progetti. Mi piacerebbe confrontarmi apertamente e sapere se condividete le mie opinioni, che come sempre sono molto personali e possono essere sbagliate. Non esitate a farmi sapere come pensate.
I believe that one of the most important step in the photographic process, oft undervalued is the editing. The way we make a selection is crucial for the final result. I already made a comment about editing in this post speaking about my projects. Today I would like to share my editing process with you. I will appreciate your opinions and it will be interesting to know if you have same ideas I have. Of course my ideas are very personal and as always can be wrong. Please do not hesitate to let me know your opinions.

snow at km 0 – 1: in questa foto mi interessa l’aspetto quasi simmetrico interrotto solo dalla gru, sapete che mi interessano le gru. Gli studiosi delle percezione ci dicono che guardando un’immagine per prima cosa l’occhio è attirato dalla struttura delle linee. Anche la quasi assenza di colore che la fa sembrare un bianco e nero è apprezzabile, con solo la cabina del telefono rossa che fa da contrappunto alla gru gialla.
snow at km 0 – 1: in this photo, I find interesting the symmetry only slightly interrupted by the crane on the left side, and you know that I’m interested in the cranes. The experts of perception tell us that looking at an image the human eye is first attracted by the pattern , by the lines. The almost black and white look is for me a plus, with only the red telephone cell contrasting the yellow of the crane.

snow at km 0 – 2: quando ho scattato questa foto mi interessava la contrapposizione fra le linee geometriche dell’incrocio e le forme organiche degli alberi coperti di neve con il muro come elemento neutro a separare le due parti. Anche nel muro ci sono delle linee geometriche. E sempre sul muro alcune scritte bilanciano le scritte sulla strada.
snow at km 0 – 2: when I shot this photo i was interested in the contraposition between the geometric lines of the crossroad and the organic shapes of the trees covered by the snow. And the wall as neutral element to divide the two parts. In the wall there are geometric lines. And always on the walls there are words balancing the words on the road.

snow at km 0 – 3: ogni volta che passa vicino alla stazione vedo quello che resta di questa bicicletta. Pensavo con la neve diventasse un soggetto interessante, ma tutto sommato mi sembra abbastanza banale: ne abbiamo già viste decine di queste foto.
snow at km 0 – 3: each time I walk by the station I see what is left from this bicycle. I thought that with the snow it could be an interesting subject, but at the end it is nearly banal: we have already seen too many similar photos.

snow at km 0 – 4: questo è un angolo che mi piace, un edificio vecchio, gli alberi, i manifesti e l’incrocio (sono attirato dagli incroci anche se oggi si chiamano intersezioni). Ma temo manchi qui un vero centro di interesse. Un punto dove cada l’occhio.
snow at km 0 – 4 : I like this street corner, the old building, the trees, the advertising posters and the crossroad (I’m attracted by the crossroads even if now they are called intersections). But I’m afraid we miss here a center of interest. A point which attract the eye.

snow at km 0 – 5 : qui abbiamo uno spiazzo che ci separa dalle case, uno spiazzo che prima o poi diventerà un parcheggio. Mi piace come l’immagine sia divisa in tre strisce orizzontali, bianco sporco in basso, grigio scuro e colori tenui in mezzo e grigio chiaro nel cielo. Il soggetto della foto è proprio questa divisione di spazi, secondo me.
snow at km 0 – 5: here we have an open space between us and the houses, a space where soon or later they will make a parking lot. I like how the image is divided in three horizontal stripes, dirty white at the bottom, grey with soft colors in the middle and light grey in the sky. The subject is exactly this division of spaces, at least in my opinion.

snow at km 0 – 6 : un piccolo parco con un ancora più piccolo laghetto gelato. Mi interessava in rapporto ai palazzi sullo sfondo. Il colore rossastro dei palazzi funziona nel grigiore ma non mi sembra come composizione una buona immagine. Forse con un grandangolo più spinto avrei fatto qualche cosa di meglio. Ma avevo con me solo il 35 mm eq.
snow at km 0 – 6 : a small park with a small iced pond and a building on the back ground, I was interested in this relation. The reddish color of the building works well in the general grey tone but I do not find a good composition in this photo. Probably with a wider lens I had done something better as composition. But I had only the 35mm (equiv) .

snow at km 0 – 7: valgono le consideeraizioni fatte per la foto precedente. Il papà con il figlio sono troppo lontani per aggiungere interesse. Speravo venissero nella mia direzione ma si sono allontanati dall’altra parte.
snow at km 0 – 7 : here are valid the comments made for the previous photo. The father with son are too far away to create interest: I was hoping they came towards me but they went in the opposite direction.

snow at km 0 – 8 : anche qui abbiamo uno spiazzo ma non vedo un particolare interesse. Quando ho scattato la foto ho voluto includere la strada per ricordare che ci troviamo in un ambiente urbano. Guardando la foto credo sarebbe meglio tagliarla via e lasciare un’immagine più panoramica, come quella sotto. Ricordiamo che nessuno ci proibisce di migliorare il taglio di un’immagine una volta fatta.
snow at km 0 – 8 : here we have another open space but I do not find anything particularly interesting. When I took this photo I wanted to have a piece of the road in fore ground in order to underline that we are in an urban environment. But looking at the photo I think it would be better to crop the bottom side to obtain a more panoramic photo, like the next one. We should keep in mind that nobody forbid us to enhance a photo by cropping after that it has been made.

snow at km 0 – 9 : tornando a casa sono passato per la piazza ed ho fatto una foto della chiesa. Non è male come documento ma un po’ troppo stile cartoline per i miei gusti. Terrò questa foto come base per i miei esercizi di disegno, ma questa è un’altra storia.
snow at km 0 – 9 : going back home I pass through the main square of my town and I took a photo of the church. In my opinion it is not bad as document, but a little too postcard like ! I’ll keep it for my drawing exercises, but this is anothes story!
A questo punto dovrei dire che la selezione è anche influenzata dallo scopo finale del lavoro e a volte del destinatario. Ma questo sarà argomento per un’altra volta. Inoltre bisogna anche tener conto delle altre foto del lavoro per creare un aspetto coerente. Io non ho ancora deciso quesiti aspetti e per ora mi limito a dire che fra queste la mia foto preferita è questa. Credo proprio che uno di questi giorni la stamperò! E voi quale scegliereste ? e …perchè?
At this point I should say that when making a selection we should also keep in mind the final goal of the work and, sometimes its audience. But this will be the topic for another post. And we should also create a coherent look considering the other photographs involved. I have not yet considered these aspects and by now I just tell you that the photographs I prefer is the one below. I do really think one day I’ll print it! And how about you? which one do you prefer? and…why?
