Mentre lavoravo sulle foto di NY pensavo alle emozioni vissute nei pochi giorni trascorsi in questa città e che (forse) traspaiono dalle mie immagini. E mi domandavo quale rapporto ci fosse con la vera New York. Ammesso che esista una “vera” New York. Ho riletto allora l’interessante articolo di Joerg Colberg su fotografia e luoghi. Ho pensato all’approccio di Pieter Hugo che trovate in questa intervista (se non leggete l’inglese almeno guardate le sue foto!) e che riassumo in “non è responsabilità dell’artista come le persone percepiscono un luogo dalle mie foto” e quello opposto che Stacy Kranitz chiama regressione alla media (concetto statistico) nel quale “le persone che si recano in un luogo sono attratte le prime volte dagli aspetti estremi per poi pian piano vederne la normalità” .

When I was working on the NYC photos I thought about the emotions I felt during the few days I was there and which (maybe) show trough my images. And I asked myself which relationship could be found with the real New York. If there is a real NY. I read again the interesting articles by Joerg Colberg about photography and places. I thought about the approach of Pieter Hugo in this interview which I summarize “as an artist is not my responsibility how other people perceive a place from my work” and on the other side the idea Stacy Kranitz calls “regression to the mean”, a statistic concept for which “people in a new place are attracted by the extreme aspects in the beginning and only after many times they see the normality”.

Comi dice Colberg la frase “io sono un artista” a volte funziona ma noi non siamo obbligati ad accettarne in toto tutte le implicazioni. Se io fotografo l’Africa oppure New York il mio lavoro sarà comunque confrontato con la rappresentazione dell’Africa o di New York fatta in molti decenni. Ma anche lavorare per eliminare tutti gli aspetti estremi per rappresentare solo “la media” non convince perchè in questo modo si rischia di eliminare anche le emozioni e la creatività.

As Colberg says the phrase “I’m an Artist” sometimes works but we are not forced to buy it. If I take photos of Africa or New York my body of work will be anyway confronted with the representation of Africa or New York over many decades. But also overworking to eliminate all the extreme aspects to represent only “the media” is not convincing because it this way we risk to eliminate emotions and creativity as well.

Un’altra domanda è se io ho visto la stessa NY vista dai suoi abitanti. Mi spiego con un esempio. La Quinta Strada che ho visto io passeggiando tranquillamente insieme a mia moglie è la stessa che vedono i commessi o le commesse dei lussuosi negozi quando al mattino si recano al lavoro dopo un lungo viaggio in metropolitana? Oppure il Central Park dove ho passeggiato è lo stesso che vedono gli addetti alle pulizie? Il Matisse visto al MoMA è lo stesso visto dal pittore? Trasmette la stessa emozione a tutti?

Another question is if I saw the same NY seen by his inhabitants. I’ll explain with an example. The Fifth Avenue I saw strolling with my wife is the same Fifth Avenue seen by the salespeople working in the luxurious shops when they arrive in the morning after commuting by subway? Or is the Central Park where I walked the same seen by the people working to keep it clean and agreeable? Is the Matisse seen in the crowd of the MoMA the same seen by the painter? Is it giving the same emotions to everybody?

In realtà la fotografia è un processo di sottrazione: noi siamo immersi in un ambiente, lo percepiamo in tutta la sua interezza. Ma quando fotografiamo ne scegliamo solo una piccola parte, sottraendo dall’inquadratura tutto il resto. E allora quello che rimane la nostra visione.

In reality photography is a process of exclusion: we are immersed in a location and when we decide to photograph we select only a small part of it, excluding from the frame all what is redundant. And than what remains is our vision.

E allora lascio che il bambino dentro di me si lasci catturare dagli estremi, con l’emozione provata quando ha visto questo Peterbilt nel centro di Manhattan! Therefore I let the small child inside me to be captured by the extremes, like the emotion when he saw this Peterbilt downtown Manhattan !

E ho una foto anche per il ritorno alla media! And I have a photo also for my regression to the mean!

E voi quando siete in un posto nuovo cosa fotografate?

Editing NYC: 9-11

Quando mia moglie ed io abbiamo visitato Ground Zero ci aspettavamo una realtà molto forte. Ma l’impatto, l’emozione sono stati talmente forti da rendere difficile anche il fotografare. Sembrava quasi irrispettoso. Ma nello stesso tempo volevamo salvare queste emozioni in qualche modo, sembrava importante. Allora ho affrontato la situazione con molta cautela. C’era un sole molto forte quel giorno, con situazioni di contrasto estreme, luci ed ombre. Dopo qualche scatto con la Zeiss mi sono sentito insicuro del risultato (che non volevo mancare) e allora sono passato alla Leica x1. Uno sguardo preliminare al pannello LCD, l’istogramma e la possibilità di lavorare il file raw mi avrebbero aiutato. Del resto questa era la ragione per la quale avevo nella mia borsa una piccola macchina digitale: le situazioni di luce difficili, almeno per me.

Fra le foto scattate ho scelto le tre che presento. Perchè queste tre? Io vedo queste tre foto come un trittico: il ricordo delle persone che non sono più con noi e che non saranno dimenticate, luce ed ombra che si combattono come metafora del bene e del male in lotta e la vita che trionfa alla fine, con la foto della ricostruzione. Almeno, questa è la mia interpretazione.

Attorno al perimetro dove c’erano le torri sono scritti i nomi delle vittime: il giorno del loro compleanno accanto al loro nome viene messa una rosa bianca.

When my wife and me visited Ground Zero we were ready to face a strong reality. But the impact, the emotion was so strong that made difficult even take photos. It seemed somehow disrespectful. But meantime we wanted to save these emotions in some way, we felt it important. Therefore I approached this situation very slowly. There was a very strong sun that day producing very hard contrast, lights and shadows. I took a few pics with my Zeiss but I was unsure of the result so I switched to my Leica x1. A preliminary look at the LCD, the histogram and the benefit of the raw files could help me.
By the way this was the main reason to have that small digital camera in my bag, in case of difficult (to me) light situations.

From the series I shot I now selected the three frames I posted . Why these three? I see these photos like a triptych, memories for the people who are no more with us and whom we’ll never forget #1, light and shadow fighting each others #2 like a metaphor for good against bad and the life which takes again its role with the rebuilding #3.
At least this is my interpretation.

Around the perimeter where there were the tower are all the names of the victims: the day of their birthday near their name a white rose is placed.

Tornati da un viaggio inizia un’altra parte del processo fotografico. Sviluppare, scansionare, stampare i provini, organizzare i files, selezionare: è un’attività che a me piace molto perchè la trovo creativa almeno quanto le riprese fotografiche: è un processo lungo, occorre tempo e pazienza, ne parleremo.

Back from a journey begins a new stage of the photographic process. Developing, scanning, contacts printing, organizing files, editing: it is an activity I like very much because I find it as creative as shooting: it’s a long process which requires time and patience, we’ll speak about.

After NYC

L’avventura di New York è finita. Ora è il momento di combattere il jetlag, rilassarsi e lasciar decantare un poco le emozioni vissute e trasformarle in ricordi. Iniziare a leggere i libri portati a casa. Sapete, non sono capace di entrare in una libreria senza uscire con un bel po’ di carta e parole sotto braccio e se per caso (!) passo dal bookshop della New York Public Library, del MoMA o dell’International Center of Photography allora le tentazioni sono forti. Peccato che il limite di peso dei bagagli imposti dalle linee aeree mi abbia frenato…

The NewYorker…

The New York adventure is over. Now it’s time to fight the jetlag, relax and settle down all the emotions and transform them into memories. To begin to read the books I brought home. You know, I’m not able to enter in a bookstore without going out with a lot of paper and words under my arm and if, by chance (!) I’m passing through the bookshop of the New York Public Library, of the MoMA or of the International Center of Photography in this case the temptations are very strong. Unfortunately the limitations in weight for the luggage by the flights companies stopped me a little…

Books from NYC

Non so se sia giusto o come facciano gli altri ma io quando viaggio distinguo sempre fra un viaggio il cui scopo principale è la fotografia e quello in cui la fotografia è un’attività complementare. Nel primo caso esiste un progetto, un tema su cui concentrarsi e i movimenti e le attività sono decisi in funzione di quello, come è stato nel caso del nostro Progetto Praga. L’attrezzatura è adeguata al progetto e viene dedicato del tempo ad una visione delle immagini scattate sul campo giornalmente. Nel secondo caso invece si vive l’emozione e la sorpresa di un ambiente nuovo come capita, persone, luci, incontri casuali, odori, rumori, sensazioni. Certo come appassionati fotografi abbiamo sempre un apparecchio con noi e se qualcosa ci interessa scattiamo. Se poi dai vari scatti possa emergere un corpo di lavoro omogeneo con un suo significato non è così importante in questo momento. Si vedrà a posteriori, forse si, forse no. In ogni caso avremo delle foto che rimanderanno a delle emozioni e che verranno utilizzate in qualche modo.

I do not know if it is “correct” or how other people do but personally when traveling I always distinguish between a journey where photography is the main goal and that where photography is simply a complementary activity. In the first case there is an idea, a project on which to focus and the movements and activities are decided about it, as it was with our Prague Project. In the second case we live the emotion and the surprise of a new environment as it happens, people, lights, casual meetings, smells, sounds, feelings. Sure, as passionate photographers we have anyway a camera with us and if something catch our attention we shoot. If later from the various frames we’ll be able to extract an homogenous body of work it is not important at this stage. We’ll see later, maybe yes, maybe not. We’ll have anyway photos related to our emotions which could be used in a different way.

Questo viaggio era del secondo tipo e io avevo in tasca la mia folding Zeiss caricata con pellicole in bianco e nero. In qualche caso ho anche scattato con la piccola digitale. E’ un mio limite ma trovo difficile scattare nello stesso tempo con due sistemi tanto diversi. Ne parleremo in un altro post! Dimenticavo, quelle foto in relax quasi giocose cui non so rinunciare le ho fatte con l’i.phone, confesso!

Tourist or photographer? With american shoes…

This journey was of the second type and I had in my pocket the folding Zeiss with B&W film in it. I also shoot with the small digital sometimes. It’s probably one of my limitations but I find difficult to shoot two very different systems in the same circumstances. We’ll speak about this one of the next times. I was forgetting: do you know those playful photos which I cannot give up? Yes, I took with the i.phone, I admit!
