My 2014 Pinhole Day Photo

La mia foto del  Pinhole Day 2014

Ho già spiegato ieri che per essere la Giornata Mondiale della Fotografia Stenopeica sono stato  pigro, anche se ho spostato le sedie! Mi impegnerò maggiormente la prossima volta!

As I said yesterday I have been lazy for the Worlwide Pinhole Day  even if I moved the chairs! I’ll make a better effort next time!

La prima foto fa parte di quelle del pacchetto di pellicole scadute che mi ha dato qualche problema. Il rettangolo in centro non è voluto ma potrebbe avere un significato, io però non so tanto bene quale. The first photo is from that package of 2010 expired film which gave me a few problems. The rectangle in the middle was not desired but could have any meaning, but I do not know which one.

#1 – WWPD 2014

Con un pacco nuovo ho ottenuto questa foto, illuminazione casalinga e tempo di posa di circa 30 secondi. Già meglio ma troppo “giusta” per essere stenopeica…With a new pack I got this photo, exposure time around 30 sec. Already better but too “right” to be a pinhole…

Allora ho provato una cosa un poco diversa con l’ aiuto di Simo. Than I tried something a little different with the help of Simo.

Ovviamente co un tempo di posa di 30″ la foto più morbida…a me piace.

Of course with an exposure time of 30″ the photo is softer…I like it.

Giocando un poco potrebbe diventare così, ma di questo ne parliamo un’altra volta…adesso devo scegliere quale inviare alla galleria del WWPD2014: voi quale scegliereste? Ci sono già più di 800 partecipanti 🙂

Wet World Wide Pinhole Day

Anche oggi pioggia, come l’anno scorso in occasione della Giornata Mondiale della Fotografia Stenopeica. Aggiungiamo un poco di pigrizia. E allora? Non potevo non fare nulla. Ho preso dall’armadio un vecchio telo nero, quello che mio papà adoperava quando (io ero bambino allora) allestiva la camera oscura nel bagno di casa e con le calamitine  lo ho appeso alla libreria. Dopo ho ho spostato due poltroncine, preso una sedia dalla cucina  e l’ho messa davanti al telo. Annie Leibovitz nel suo libro “At Work” racconta che Arnold Newman sosteneva la fotografia fosse 1% talento e 99% spostare mobili ed io metto in pratica! Lo stage era pronto. A questo punto ho messo sulla sedia un gallo (finto) che fa parte delle decorazioni pasquali.  Piazzata la macchina ho scattato (si può dire scattare quando l’otturatore è un pezzo di nastro adesivo nero e la posa è di circa trenta secondi?).  Tre foto in tutto (le pellicole istantanee che adopero costicchiano).

Again, rainy day. As last year for the World Wide Pinhole Day . I should add a little bit of laziness. So, what? I could not rest without doing anything. I took from the armoir a black cloth, the one my father used to prepare his darkroom in our bathroom (I really was a child in that time) and I hung it to the bookshelf. Than I moved a couple of armchairs, I took a simple kitchen chair a placed it in front of the black cloth. Annie Leibowitz in her book “At Work” tells that Arnold Newman was used to say photography to be 1% talent and 99% moving furniture and I practice it! Now the stage was ready. I simply put on the chair a rooster (fake) which was around because of Easter decorations. Placed my camera near it I shot (Is it possible to say shoot when the shutter is a piece of black tape and the pose is about 30 seconds?). I made three photos (the instant films I use are quite expensive).

Volete vedere il risultato?  Non ho ancora scansionato le tre foto, se siete curiosi potete vedere cosa ho fatto lo scorso anno! Qui!

How did this story begin I wrote here. Now some more photos.

 Deserted tennis courts. They are really there. We never know why are they deserted. We look at, and more we look at them more they seem to be deserted. Deserted of themselves, deserted. This thing stops here.

Everything collapsed. We only treausured the chaos of the nature, its madness.

The sea.  It took everything.  He broke the marble forest.

But the sea is also a guardian. Christ is also a guardian.

And yes, it’s also a guardian, he’s in the wrong the sea.

It walks with the time, as if it could be possible.

Dovreste già aver letto che fra i miei interessi c’è la fotografia stenopeica, alcuni articoli li potete leggere qui. Oggi vi racconto come ho iniziato. Primo passo l’acquisto, spinto dalla curiosità di una macchina stenopeica in cartone della Polaroid. Credo ce ne siano pochissime in giro, in ogni caso ne sono molto orgoglioso 🙂

Probably you already know that among my interests there is the pinhole photography, you can read something here. To day I’ll tell how did it start. First step was to buy a cardboard Polaroid Pinhole camera, because I was curious. I believe there are not many around and I’m a …proud owner!

Poche settimane dopo era tempo di vacanze: per un insieme di circostanze non potevamo allontanarci troppo  e la meta scelta è stato il lago di Como, un’ora d’auto da casa. Non era pensabile andare in vacanza senza una macchina fotografica e allora quale scegliere? Facile, la nuova Polaroid stenopeica! Se il posto per noi era familiare questa scelta avrebbe dato delle foto differenti, non le solite “già vista 1000 volte!”.

A few weeks later was holiday time: because of some special circumstances we could not travel too far and we decided for the Como Lake, more or less one hour drive from home. Unthinkable to go on holiday without a camera and the question was: which one? Easy, the new Pinhole Polaroid! If the place was already known and familiar to us this choice had given different pictures, not the usual “already seen 1000 times!”.

Poco prima di partire  avevo trovato un delizioso libricino di Marguerite Duras dal titolo “Il mare scritto” illustrato da fotografie di Hèléne Bamberger: per ogni foto, scattata durante le passeggiate in Normandia  una piccola frase. E allora ho deciso che anzichè scattare a caso avrei fatto, con la mia macchina stenopeica delle foto che richiamassero quelle del libro, oppure potessero adattarsi alle frasi di Marguerite Duras. Ovviamente tenendo conto che eravamo sul lago di Como e non a Trouville, Normandia.

Short before leaving I found a delicious small book from Marguerite Duras “The written sea” with photographs by Hèléne Bamberger: a short sentence for each photograph. The photos were shot when walking on the coasts of Normandie. So I decided that instead to shoot in a random way I had taken with my pinhole camera pictures referring to the ones in the book, or which could be adapted to the sentences of Marguerite Duras. Of course keeping in mind we were on the Como Lake and not in Trouville, Normandie.

Dopo la vacanza le ho assemblate insieme alle frasi del libricino. Insieme ad altri miei lavori hanno fatto parte di una mia esposizione dal titolo “5 pezzi facili e non perfetti” nel settembre del 2008, ma di questo scriverò un’altra volta.  Ora qualche foto…

After the holidays I assembled these photos with the sentences from the book. Together with a few other my works these have been part of an exhibition entitled “5  pieces easy and not perfect” I had in september 2008, but I’ll write  about it another time. Now, the photos…

Daily we looked at it, the written sea lake . 

The calm of the white. The remainder is time.

I don’t know anything more.

Maybe it’s Chile or a  much reviewed and much adjusted Japan.

It depends on you, dear viewer.

I photographed the sea and than I printed the photo, I left bringing it with me in a book.

The sea remained there, courteous, delicate, perfect, INVISIBLE, ETERNAL.

Ho selezionato, scansionato, aggiustato un poco i files e stampato le foto della giornata mondiale di fotografia stenopeica. Le ho appese con le solite calamitine alla mia libreria. Non avete idea per un fotografo quanto sia utile una libreria metallica! Si, mi piacciono queste foto!

After selecting, scanning and adjusting I printed the photos from the Worldwide Pinhole Day. I hanged them on my bookcase with the usual small magnets. You have no idea how useful is for a photographer to have a metallic bookcase! Yes, I like these pictures!

Da molti anni l’ultima domenica di aprile è la Giornata Mondiale della Fotografia Stenopeica. Per chi non lo sapesse, si tratta di fotografare con apparecchi che al posto dell’obiettivo hanno solo un minuscolo foro. E’ il principio della “camera obscura”,  strumento utilizzato da pittori come Canaletto per riprodurre i minuscoli dettagli dei suoi paesaggi. Io confesso di non essere particolarmente appassionato a questo tipo di fotografia ma in questi tempi di perfezione digitale e fotografie “virtuali” che si vedono solo su schermi, monitor e altri strumenti tecnologici ogni tanto mi piace questo approccio molto basilare. E allora quest’anno ho deciso di prendere parte a questa manifestazione anche per provare quella sensazione particolare dovuta al fatto di sapere che nella stessa giornata in tutto il mondo altri fotografi sono impegnati nella stessa attività.

Since many years the last sunday of April is the Worldwide Pinhole Day. For the friends who do not know what we are speaking about it means taking pictures with a camera which instead of a lens has a very small hole, a pinhole. It’s the principle of the “camera obscura” used, among the others by Canaletto to reproduce all the details in his landscape paintings. I have to admit I’m not really passionate of it but in the today’s  times so full of the extreme  perfection of digital photography and with so many “virtual” photos, which you only see on a monitor or on the  screen of an high tech device I like occasionally this return to a basic photography. Therefore I decided to take part. Another reason is the special feeling you have when you do something and you know that many other people worldwide are doing something similar.

Quest’anno non avevo un’idea precisa sulla quale lavorare, e allora dopo questi test del giorno prima ho deciso di fare qualche cosa in bianco e nero, adoperando una pellicola istantanea  ad alta sensibilità. Ho iniziato di buona lena subito al mattino, mentre preparavo la colazione.

This year I had not an exact project to work on, therefore after these  tests of the day before I decided to use an high speed instant film and work in black and white. The start was early, breakfast time.

Dopo la colazione ho provato una natura morta, la frutta è un soggetto familiare dei miei esercizi di disegno. After breakfast I tried a still life, fruit is a familiar subject for my attemtpt to learn drawing. 🙂

Una delle difficoltà di questo tipo di fotografia è che la mia macchina, che essenzialmente è una scatola di cartone con applicato un dorso Polaroid per le pellicole non ha mirino e l’inquadratura viene fatta ad occhio, così come l’esposizione. Il vantaggio di adoperare pellicole istantanee è quello di poter correggere subito gli errori. Che comunque si pagano cari, considerato il prezzo di queste pellicole 😦 One fo the difficulties in this kind of photography is that my camera, which essencially is a carboard box with a polaroid back, has no viewfinder. Framing (and exposure) is based more or less on the photographer experience. The positive side to use instant film is that you can correct what is wrong, but mistakes can be expensive taking into account the cost of the films 😦

Fotografare è una questione di luce, e allora ho pensato ad un ritrattto. Mia moglie, che si è prestata a rimanere il più possibile immobile per il tempo necessario per l’esposizione, circa 15″.

Photography is about the light and I thought of a portrait. My wife was my model, trying not to move for the necessary time, about 15″.

Nonostante la giornata piovosa, nella speranza di una location suggestiva siamo andati al lago ed abbiamo approfittato di una piccola schiarita. La pellicola si è dimostrata troppo sensibile e il risultato è un po’ evanescente. Allora ci ho giocato un poco…

In spite of the rainy day, in the hope of a good location we went in the afternoon to a lake, where we just took one photo in between the showers. But the light was too much for this kind of film and the result was somehow evanescent. I played a little with it…

Sfortunatamente il molo dietro la schiena della mia modella disturba molto. Sarebbe facile toglierlo con un programma di postproduzione, ma trattandosi di fotografia analogica non mi sembra corretto! Teniamo l’errore! Saremo più attenti un’altra volta!

Unfortunately the peer beside the back of my model disturbs the composition. It would be easy to remove it with a postproduction software, but here we are in the field of the pinhole photography and I think it would not be correct! We’ll keep the mistake, next time we’ll pay more attention!

La pioggia ci ha rimandato quasi subito a casa. Avevo ancora qualche foto da scattare, e ho pensato al vaso fotografato il sabato. Ma non volendo ripetere la stessa foto ci ho messo le mie rose secche. La luce stava calando ed ho dovuto adoperare tempi abbastanza  lunghi.

Because of the rain we drove back home soon. I still had a few pics in the camera and I thought at vase I photographed on saturday. Burt desiring to change a little I put my dried roses in the vase.

E per finire ho adoperato il ritratto di Simo fatto al mattino…

Per chi fosse interessato ai dettagli tecnici ho adoperato una pellicola istantanea bianco e nero Fuji FP-3000B, dalla sensibilità di 3.000 iso. I tempi di esposizione in casa variavano fra i 10″ e i 180″(vaso con le rose).

For who is interested in the technical details I used a B&W 3000 iso Fuji film FP-3000B . Exposure times varied between 15″ and 180″ (the roses).
