Questa foto era stata preparata per una mostra collettiva il cui tema è “Habitat” e dove ognuno aveva a disposizione uno spazio di un metro per esporre il proprio lavoro. Habitat è un concetto molto vasto che può essere sviluppato da diversi punti di vista. L’ambiente in cui viviamo con le sue caratteristiche, i suoi problemi, le opportunità. Le persone che incontriamo e dove le incontriamo. I trasporti e come ci muoviamo. L’architettura, l’attenzione (?) al verde, alla cultura, allo shopping e alla cultura dello shopping 😦
I prepared this picture to take part in a collective exhibition whose theme was “Habitat” and where each photographer had a space of one meter to display his own work. Habitat is a wide concept which can be developed by various points of view. The environment in which we live with its characteristics, its problems, the opportunities. The people we meet and the places in which we meet them. The transports and how we move. The architecture, the attention to the green (?), the culture and the shopping culture 😦
Ma tutte queste idee contengono un lato negativo ed io ho preferito un atteggiamento più rilassato, positivo senza però ignorare le problematiche attorno all’ambiente. E allora durante una breve vacanza sulle Alpi svizzere ho scattato un paio di pellicole con la mia Holga, 24 foto in tutto dalle quali selezionare le foto per l’esposizione.

But all these ideas have a “dark side” and i preferred a more relaxed and positive attitude, without ignoring anyway that our habitat is menaced by many problems. So, during a short holiday in the swiss Alps I shot a couple of film with my Holga, for a total of 24 photos among which I had to choice the ones for the exhibition.
Per me è stato subito chiaro che le foto significative erano queste cinque, una delle quali esprimeva il paesaggio montano (per la cronaca sono a Riederalp sopra il ghiacciaio dell’Aletsch). E’ un posto accessibile anche ai non più giovani (come me) e dove si arriva o a piedi o in funivia ma non in auto. Quindi tranquillità, silenzio, aria pulita. Ma sappiamo che i ghiacciai sono minacciati dalle attività dell’uomo. La foto con la macchina movimento terra serve a ricordarci questo.

It was soon clear for me that the photos had to be these five, one of which with a mountain landscape (it is Riederalp, over the Great Aletsch Glacier). It is a place where even the no more young (as myself) can arrive but only on foot or by cable-car, not by cars. Quietness, silence, clean air. But we know that the glaciers are menaced by the human activity. The photo with the bulldozer symbolizes this aspect.
Un antenna satellitare invece ci ricorda che viviamo in un momento in cui la tecnologia arriva dappertutto, con i suoi vantaggi ed i suoi inconvenienti. Ho inserito anche i due fiori che avete già visto in questo articolo: considerando una certa casualità al momento dello scatto (sempre nella stessa breve vacanza) io credo che la loro presenza in questo lavoro diventi una metafora. Quale? A vostra scelta, ognuno può scegliere la sua preferita…ma un fiore colorato e uno nero…
A parabolic antenna to remind us we are in an high-tech world and the technology arrives almost everywhere with many benefits and a few drawbacks. I inserted in this work also the photo of two flowers you have already seen in this post: thinking of a certain level of fortuity when I shot them (during the same short holiday) I believe that in this work they become a metaphor. Which one? You can think about and make your choice…but a flower full of color and one black…
Scelte le foto era importante decidere come presentarle. La prima idea era di stampare le cinque foto in misura adeguata e appenderle con un piccolo passpartout nello spazio a disposizione. Ma non mi piaceva perchè di poco impatto visivo e allora cercando altre soluzioni ho pensato all’idea della matrice 5×5 con l’immagine principale ripetuta molte volte per sottolinearne l’importanza inserendo però le altre immagini di disturbo. Il tutto montato su un pannello di alluminio al vivo. Avevo anche pensato di stampare tutte le immagini nel formato piccolo (10x10cm) ed incollarle manualmente ma la mia scarsa propensione per certi lavori manuali mi ha convinto a preparare un collage digitale.
After the choice of the pictures it was important to decide how to display them. The first thought was to print the single images, frame them with a passpartout and hang them. But I did not like it because the visual impact was too low. So I decided for a matrix 5×5 with the main image repeated many times to underline its importance inserting a few “disturbing” images to break the regular pattern. All this was mounted on an aluminium panel. To say the truth I also planned to print all the photos in the small size (10x10cm) and glue each one on the panel but my low level of craftsmanship brought me to assemble the image in a digital way.
La foto che non c’è. Fra le immagini idonee per questo collage ce ne era un’altra scattata in quell’occasione che mi sarebbe piaciuto inserire: questa. Sotto un cielo blu intenso, nel quale sventola una bandiera davanti al ghiacciaio dell’ Aletsch una persona, di spalle e non riconoscibile contempla la bellezza del panorama seduta su una sedia a rotelle. Questo perchè credo che un habitat amico debba permettere a tutti di goderne la bellezza. Non l’ho inserita perchè scattata con la macchina digitale di mia moglie e non con la Holga. E’ vero che con pochi passaggi di Photoshop avrei potuto renderla quadrata, aggiungere un po’ di vignettatura e sfocatura ed in quelle dimensione nessuno si sarebbe accorto dell’origine diversa. Ma sarebbe stato un falso, un tradire l’idea di questo lavoro a base di immagini scattate su pellicola con una macchinetta semplicissima. Per me la coerenza di un’idea è più importante dell’aspetto visivo.
The photo which is not here. Among the images useful for this collage there was another that I had liked to insert: this one. Under the blue sky with a flag with flying colours in front of the Aletsch Glacier a man, seen from behind him (without seeing his face) contemplates the beautiful landscape sitting on a wheelchair. This because I think that a friendly habitat must give everybody the chance to enjoy it. I did not use this photo because it was shot with the digital camera of my wife and not with the Holga. It is true that with a quick Photoshop work I could make it square, add some blurr and some vignetting and considering the small sizes nobody had understood it was not Holga made. But it had been a false, it had been like to cheat the idea of this work based on a very basic film camera. For me it is more important the coherence than the visual aspect.
