Sunday photos, with something special…

La domenica era proprio bella quando una coppia di amici ha invitato mia moglie e me per una passeggiata nella brughiera. Sole, aria limpida, l’ideale per scattare qualche foto in relax. Ma io avevo in testa qualche cosa di diverso, colpa di due donne amiche blogger. No, così non suona bene, sembra un poco maleducato.  Proviamo così:  ero ispirato dai post di due amiche blogger ed ho voluto provare una cosa un po’ diversa da quelle che faccio di solito. E allora desidero come prima cosa ringraziarle:  grazie Nia e grazie beweightless 🙂

sunday afternoon photo

It really was a nice sunday when a couple of friends invited me and my wife for a walk in the moor. Sun and clear  air are supposed to be ideal to take a few relaxed snaps, but I had something very different in my head. Two woman, friend bloggers were responsible for that. No, like this it does not sounds well, it is not very polite. Let me try in a different way. Recently I read the post of two good friends blogger which inspired me to try something different. And first I desire to thank them both: grazie Nia e grazie beweightless 🙂

Ad ispirarmi è stata da una parte questo post di Nia con “quella” fotografia.  E quest’altro dal blog beweightless con questa bellissima collezione di macchine fotografiche che io chiamerei non convenzionali.

To inspire me was this post from Nia with “that” photo. And this other from the blog beweightless with her beautiful collection of what I would dare to call not conventional cameras. 

Allora ho aperto l’armadio e ho cercate la mia prima reflex, acquistata con un dei miei primi stipendi, circa 40 anni addietro. La macchina è una Minolta SRT 101 e la potete vedere in questa foto.

Then I look into the cupboard for my first reflex camera, which I bough more or less 40 years ago with one of my first salaries. The camera was a Minolta SRT 101.

Non è un caso che sullo sfondo ci sia il libro di Annie Leibovitz: infatti in una delle prime pagine Annie racconta che la sua prima macchina fotografica è stata proprio una Minolta SRT 101. Abbiamo avuto qualche cosa in comune, io ed Annie!

It is not casual the Annie Leibovitz book in the background: in one of the first pages she tell us that her first camera was a Minolta SRT 101 ! We had something in common, me and Annie!

Controllato che l’otturatore scattasse ho cercato una pellicola da adoperare e ovviamente ho scelto una pellicola scaduta da tempo.

After having checked that the shutter worked I look for a film and, of course I choiced  an expired film. Just to be in the spirit of the old times.

A questo punto insieme alla nostra coppia di amici siamo andati a fare una passeggiata nei boschi non lontano da casa. Ricordandomi del post “Landscapes of the Mind”  di Annika Ruohonen, fotografa finlandese che citando un’intervista di Steve McCurry (in lingua inglese) ci parla dell’importanza di sentirsi a casa nel posto che si fotografa per avere un risultato non da semplice turista. Allora ho pensato che la brughiera vicino a casa potesse offrirmi qualche buona opportunità. L’idea che non sia necessario andare lontano per fare foto interessanti è fra quelle che hanno ispirato il mio progetto di fotografia a chilometro zero. Colgo l’occasione di suggerirvi di visitare il blog di Annika, sia per le foto sia per i pensieri contenuti nei suoi racconti di fotografa e mamma.

Now, together with our friends we went for the walk in the moor, not far from home. I had just read the post “Landscapes of the Mind” by Annika Ruohonen, a finnish photographer who  commenting an interview by Steve McCurry (english language) reminds us how important is to feel at home in the place where you are taking photos. After all is one of the reasons for which I started my project photography at km zero is the idea that it is not necessary to travel far in order to get an interesting photo. I take the opportunity to suggest you to visit the Annika’s blog, it is worthwhile both for the pictures and for the interesting thoughts she has as photographer and as mother. 

Ma la mia cara Minolta non ha funzionato come doveva, molte foto tornate dal laboratorio sono mosse e sovraesposte. Immagino che l’otturatore mi desse tempi molto lenti anche quando impostato su 1/125 sec. E allora queste sono alcune delle foto come tornate dal laboratorio.

But my dear Minolta did not work as supposed: most of photos which came back from the lab are overexposed and blurred: I imagine that the shutter even if set at 1/125 gave a much longer time. And then these are a few photos as they came back from the lab.

Ma a me piace l’esperienza della fotografia per le sensazioni che mi dà ed anche se tecnicamente le foto non sono il massimo, a dire il vero queste son proprio male, ho provato piacere nel maneggiare la mia vecchia macchina. Credo proprio che la farò controllare da un tecnico !

But I like the experience of photography because of that special feeling I get and even if the photos are not technically perfect, to be honest these are really bad, I had pleasure to use my old camera. I do really think I’ll look for a technician to repair it!

A questo punto dovrei ringraziare le moderne tecnologie, perchè lavorando un poco con il fotoritocco sono riuscito ad arrivare a questi risultati: lontano dall’essere perfetti ma almeno…foto visibili.

At this point I should only thank the modern technology because working on the scans with the PS software I manage to improve my photos: very far from perfection but at least…visible.

Ovviamente per avere una buona foto il primo passo è di fare una buona ripresa: mi ricordo che quando mio papà mi insegnava a stampare (in camera oscura)  diceva sempre che la foto che si stampa bene è quella con un negativo ben esposto. Ma a volte è bello anche giocare un poco con i nostri errori. E’ un piccolo divertissement, ma io insisterò ancora con questi negativi. Forse mi verrà una buona idea…

Of course to have a good photo the first step is to be careful when taking it:  I remember that my father when teaching me to print (in the wet darkroom) was always telling that the photo which can be printed very well is the one with a good exposed negative. But sometimes it is nice to play a little with our flops . It’s a little divertissement, but I’ll try to work with these negatives. Maybe a good idea will come…
